  • Pretty Nice

At this point, EC and bass player Bruce Thomas weren't on the best of terms and Elvis asked Nick Lowe to replace him, both in the studio and on tour, sometimes calling the resulting band "The Imposters" as often as "The Attractions". Although Lowe didn't last as Costello's bass player, his work on this album shows that he fit right in. Sometimes I wish Elvis and Nick would go back to working together full time. A nice little album, but my heart is still back in the "My Aim is True/This Year's Model/Armed Forces/Get Happy" era. Still, any Elvis is good Elvis, so buy this album...

  • Last great Elvis Costello album

1994 is now a long time ago, but I remember my joy after the release of this album. Finally another pop gem from EC and the Attractions, 8 years after Blood and Chocolate. Alas, it seems it would be his last. Great songs and great production. Falling squarely outside the popular alt-rock vogue of the time and getting virtually no play on indie-oriented college radio, Brutal Youth ended up being one of the most overlooked records of the mid-nineties. This takes nothing away from its greatness. Like all great Elvis Costello records, it only gets better with repeated listenings.
