One of my favorite things to do at the opening credits of a movie is guess who the composer of the movie's score is. My first guess was John Williams but I knew it couldn't be because this movie was too lowkey for him. I decided to wait until I had heard more. It wasn't until the near end that I knew exactly who it was. If you follow the work of James Horner you would know it was him when you heard track 13 (Jared and Mulgarath Fight). The piano there is almost exactly the same as Casper which Horner composed in the 90's. Nothing about this score overly impressed me and I wish he hadn't revisited his beautiful score from Casper. But it is still a good score that makes the movie enjoyable. I do hope he works on more children's films in the future.

I like the conductor's work, but does anyone else hear the resemblance to the Casper music? Music is good, but a little bit rough sometimes.

I'm sorry, has anyone seen Casper the movie? Yeah...James all I heard was your music from Casper. I watched this movie for the first time the other day and I could hum to the music. If any of you loved his work here, you should check out the Casper soundtrack. I'm disappointed James doesn't anyone critique your work?

This is just Casper and A Beautiful Mind packed in a different box. Nothing original. Not worth for buying.

I loved the books and all,the album is good, but the stupid movie people changed 100% of the books in the movie! I can't belive it! If you like the Spiderwick Chronicals, then you should side with me!:(
  • Memorable Themes, Unrelenting Adventure, and Much Heart

This score is certainly mostly "action" music without a direct focus on a specific melody, but there are themes symbolizing just about every notable element and character in the story, each of them memorable. All the while, though, there is rarely a moment where the pace stops. The effective combination of excitement and a whole range of evocative melodies, from whimsical to highly dramatic, is absolutely essential to the success of any fantasy score. But, without a cohesive "heart", a score is just a "tool" and can't stand on its own and doesn't move the film to the level it should. The "heart" of this score becomes more and more apparent throughout the score as all of the elements unfold together, culminating with an explosion of energy and undeniable "magic" present in the last three tracks.

I found this somewhat boring and couldn't pick out a real theme. Definitely not Horner's best work.

I was very surprised with this soundtrack thought it was amazing. I play oboe and some of the songs really get to showcase it!
