At work a guy plays this occasionally. I always ask " Who's this ? ". I always enjoy it. Finally I went home and looked up the album. Money was tight so I only bought a couple of tracks. The other day I had it in mind so I asked him to play the album over the work speakers from his pod. Really enjoyed it. I looked up the album today to buy a few more cuts. I bought the whole album. Worth it at twice the price. I don't know why I had never completed my album. I listen to mostly Jazz and a lot of Classical. Though I like an occasional Eric Clapton, ELO, Tab Benoit, John Lee Hooker, Willy , Merle, Waylon. You know . . . good music. : ) PS: I feel like I gave the wrong impression. This is NOT muzak for back ground at work. This is TOP SHELF romantic listening. Musicians that know what to do with the notes as well as the space between them. Like a vacation at your finger tips.
  • Jazz on the radio?

Don't make me laugh, you mean that one radio station that plays jazz? When new/decent jazz or jazz-like music comes out radio stations want to play it. Don't cry like a bytch and just deal with it. Lol

It is very refreshing to hear Chris Botti gives a new life to some older Jazz tunes. The way he masters his trumpet completely change my view on the instrument (which has been wiped out of existence by Sax in recent years). It is not as a bright instrument in the old days, but gives a more romantic feel to a song. I have been looking for album like this in which musicians re-interpret older jazz tunes which I am familiar with. The arrangement is so much better than those played by yesterday's great who have out of dated arrangement for these songs.
  • Not a classic, just Botti's best.

I discovered this album as the result of a conversation with a friend in a bar. We were discussing how /smooth jazz, (or insturmental pop to be more accurate) is deteriorating actual Jazz by creating in peoples minds the notion that the two are one in the same. I used Botti as an example of a young musician with tremendous talent who was hurting Jazz by crafting pop music featuring his horn and synthesized insturments and drums. While my pal agreed he directed me to this album as an example of Botti perhaps coming to his senses and I agree for the most part this is is the most straight ahead example of Jazz I've yet heard from Botti. More importantly I hope that this serves an an example to other young and promissing artist who mistake "smooth" for "real" Jazz. This is a good album, with some excellent moments but if you want to hear the difference between computer generated jazz and the real thing check out 2008's Earfood by the Roy Hargrove Qunitet, a modern hard bop masterpiece. And before you start mentioning Botti with the greatest trumpet players of all time check out Miles Davis, Blue Mitchell, Harry 'Sweets" Edision, Clifford Brown and Chet Baker for starters.

Starting with the very first track, Chris Botti demonstrates why he absolutely belongs in a discussion of the best of the second-tier of jazz tumpeters of all time, including the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Chuck Mangione, Herb Alpert, and Woodie Shaw. His interpretation of these splendidly arranged classic and romantic jewels demonstrates a significant achievement in modern jazz recording. Botti works with an orchestra of outstanding musicians with grace. His work on invaluable standards such as "What'll I Do," "Someone To Watch Over Me," and "When I Fall In Love" is so very well conceived and are delivered with taste and distinction. While others have tried and failed, "One For My Baby," an incredibly difficult song to capture with esteem, shines here - and evokes a strong emotional response. "Le belle dame sans regrets," a boppy ditty performed with Sting (singing in French) is a strong indication of Botti's crossover appeal, and is absolutely outstanding. His range and control is demonstrated on "Nearness of You," which is a worthy recording alone. The intermixing of instrumental with vocals is surprisingly tight and effectively complementary, as on "How Love Should Be." Botti clearly possesses all of the skills to be mentioned with the greats of all time - in time... and this collection is a wonderful step in the right direction.

Chris Botti is a serious talent. His horn sings. With Paula Cole, he's even better.

I was going to give this four stars; but I have to give it a five-star to balance the unfair reviews. Honestly, I think Chris Botti is probably the best trumpetist alive after Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Chet Baker. I have seen a couple of his concerts and by golly he is an excellent jazz trumpetist too. But instrumentalists like him have to do these pop stuff to keep themselves fed and alive. Music is a precarious existence, after all. Kudos to him.
