As another reviewer noted, Vaughan's voice breaks in the higher range on Obsession, one of the best tracks on this album. But you don't mind at all. Smile is also incredible. This album was burned in my subconsious as a result of having listened to Vaughan with my dad before I can remember. Finding this album after long searches was a true delight. While Vaughan sings alot of standards with her own genuine inflection and style, these songs are somehow better. Her interpretation, modulation and improvisation are just phenomenal, a master at work.

When you start out with the goal of getting to know Sarah Vaughan and you look at the discography, you feel underwater from the outset. I found this gem and loved every cut and I felt like a big girl then.
  • my opinion: THE greatest vocal album

I fell in love with every single song in this album, to the point that I decided to arrange and play them all at my gigs. Occassionally, when I listen to her marvelous interpretations I cry, sometimes because we lost her, sometimes sending her a thought of love and thankfulness.

This is a captivating look at a star past her zenith, but perhaps all the more compelling because she has nothing to left to prove. The thematic material is intimate. Her voice falters at times, as in the cut "Obsession", but it is undeniably sultry. This an album is seductive and passionate, even bittersweet. I saw Sarah in performance at the Power Center in Ann Arbor, MI in 1988, and she could no longer stand (she sat on a stool the entire gig), her breathing was visibly labored, and I felt an impending loss. But even in her compromised state, she gave a memorable performance.

Probably one of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time. I have been continually listening to this album for over 20 years and still love it. How this great album could go unnoticed by so many for so long is mind boggling to me.
