  • Romantic and soothing simplicity

The sparse setting of two electric guitars and bass (no overblown lush orchestra) allows Johnny's dreamy voice to take center stage—warming up some old standards with tenderness ('Please Be Kind', for example).

The title says it all: Johnny Mathis and 2 jazz electric guitars, occasionally with a little upright bass. That's it. But with a voice like Mathis', that's all you need. Mathis takes these standards and makes them totally his own. His voice throughout this album is nothing short of amazing. His phrasing, vocal quality and range here, as well as his interperative abilities, is quite stunning. His voice has always been great, but this album is a revelation. Johnny's voice is front and center with only the slightest bit of reverb, and the beautiful and sypathetic backing of two jazz guitars, one in each channel, which makes this recording immediate and timeless. That album could have been made last week. You can almost hear the fire. And the song selection is supurb. Re-recording standards seems to be all the rage nowadays, from Michael Buble to Rod Stewart. But they can't hold a candle to Johnny Mathis and this recording. Any serious vocal student will be studying this for years, and every serious music fan should own this.

I wore our two copies of the vinyl of this album when it first came out. I was so happy to see it available on iTunes ... and on sale, no less! This is a bargain. The guitarists are Tony Motolla and Al Caiola. Boy would I love to have some of their music to purchase on iTunes! Great Stuff! Great Music ... Great memories! Wow ... now I will burn this to my iPod ... pour a nice glass of wine, sit in my comfortable chair, dim the lights and enjoy this wonderful music by these marvelously talented artists ... and this is heaven on earth! If you want a real treat ... this is the album to buy!

My grandma gave me the original album about 3 months ago and when I stuck it on the record player, I was blown away. Not many 17 year olds these days would like Johnny Mathis, but I do. He has one of the greatest voices of all time, and the guitar playing is amazing. A must have.

I bought this album as a child, and wore it out. It was out of print for quite a while. I actually got a friend who works at CBS to get it copied from their vault, and played that tape a zillion times. This is an example of Johnny's best work. His voice is completely exposed, and backed by only three instruments. The "comping" by the guitarists is magical, as is the song selection. Sit back, with a glass of wine, shut the world out, and experience one of the worlds greatest singers, interpreting some of history's best songwriters, and marvel at the entire experience.
