Reviews

  • Alternative?

For a while, Halsey’s been considered an alternative artist, and I can’t judge, considering her old albums ARE alternative. But “Maniac” is just. pop. Halsey is slowly switching categories, something I’m not crazy about. She didn’t even add the one song that is slightly alternative, “Nightmare”, and to be honest, I’m kind of interested to see how this album will develop.

The first time I heard this on the radio, I went and bought it without a second thought, and I haven’t regretted it since. I have, in fact, listened to it about fifty times. In a row.

I don’t typically write reviews before an album comes out, but I feel like i have to this time. Halsey used to make really good alternative music. Before you say she’s never been good, listen to Badlands and Room 93. That, in my opinion, was her best work so far. After her collab with The Chainsmokers, she kinda became a bit of a sellout and released Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, a pop album. But this album, in my opinion, may change that. First of all, she switched recording companies, because it’s always a possibility that it’s not really her fault, but the record label’s. Second of all, the album is called Manic because Halsey has bipolar disorder, and she wrote this entire album during a manic episode. She didn’t write it to sell, she wrote it to cope, to get her thoughts out. In my opinion, the best reason to write an album is for you, not your fans. Finally, the actual content that’s out. Graveyard was pretty meh, same with Without Me, but Clementine actually sounded like her older work. Also, I heard that the lead singer of Bring Me The Horizon put part of a collab with her on his Instagram story. Even though that band isn’t heavy metal anymore, it’s still alternative. That may be what she needs to return to her roots. I may change my review later on if I’m wrong, but for now, this is my opinion. I just really wanted to tell you about why this album may be better than Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.

One of the many reasons I love Halsey so much is that she doesn't fit into a certain category. However, that bothers people for some reason. All these negative reviews that say she ditched a punk sound for generic pop for success are WRONG. Please do your research before trashing Halsey. She explained that she set out to create an angry album but found that she wasn't as angry as she thought she was, which is obviously a good thing. And so what if she is Pop?? It's not necessarily a bad genre, and maybe she's the one to revive it! Without Me was a brand new sound for Halsey and the majority of people you might ask would know and love that song. Graveyard might not have been what we expected, but it exceeded expectations regardless. Finally, for those who say Halsey isn't 'Alternative', listen to Clementine. It's such a unique sound and so catchy that you can't NOT fall in love with it! Sure, I'm sad as well that Nightmare didn't make it to the album, but it's not like it doesn't still exist! Put it in a playlist with Manic if it bothers you that much! All in all, I'm very much excited for the next few singles and will continue supporting Ashley no matter WHAT genre she chooses to pursue.

I love Without Me, and when I heard Graveyard I was like “SHES AMAZing.” Then Clementine, I wasn’t a huge fan of it at first, (I think the music video kinda turned me off it) but then I just listening to the song and I was hooked. Her voice is amazing. ❤️❤️
