Saw them on some silly MTV Halloween 1991 special. Pumpkins, get it? Bought the album the next day. Never stopped listening to it. Tristessa is on my latest cardio playlist. Listening to Siva right now.
I still am struck by what might have been, if Billy's ego hadn't overwhelmed the fragile balance that made their sound so powerful and unique. The next album had none of the incendiary solos that James was known for, just a bunch of muddy power chords. With each successive album, the songs became more forgettable, the lyrics more pretentious. There were exceptions, like Disarm, but not many. Sure, they made a lot of money, but I don't blame James and D'arcy for walking away. I know you can't be a LSD soaked jam band forever, but the dumbed down version that became so famous was like a supermarket peach. All color on the outside, dry and tasteless within.

Where do I begin. Summer of 91, I was walking through Sound Warehouse.....dating myself for sure. I was looking for something new. Sound warehouse had headphone stand that you could just walk up to with the artist that was playing. These stands allowed you to skip around on the CD as you wanted. I listened to about 30 seconds of each song on the album and grabbed the CD. I knew I was going to love it. I had never heard of Smashing Pumpkins. This CD did not come out of car for over a year. Living Dallas, TX I kept wondering why this CD was never played on the radio. Gish is an amazing solid rock album. One of my top 10 even til this day.
Timeless beauty

There are some timeless beauties on this album. Rhinoceros, Snail... Perfection.
Snail makes me melt into this melancholy feeling of the past. Something lost, something forgotten. Some sense of longing that has been buried. I love it.

I loved this album when it first came out. All summer, in 1991, I listened to it end to end over and over again. Now the mother of a teenaged drummer, I've been pulling out my old albums, especially ones by bands with great drummers. I'm in love all over again. SO GOOD. Solid rock with good melody: it's a rare combination. Listen & enjoy!
