White Pony gets more recognition but I think this album is better. Battle Axe is my favorite track.
  • Is there anything else as heavy and lovely?

Heavy, brooding, and perhaps their most depressing (in a good way) release. The production and musicianship is pure awesomeness as usual with the Deftones.

Start to finish, pound for pound this is Deftones’ best album. Although Minerva got its fair share of airplay when the album was released (and rightfully so), it’s tracks like Hexagram, Battle-Axe, and Bloody Cape that make the album truly shine. While past and future efforts were great in their own right, they don’t hold a candle to the eponymous album. If you’re interested in seeing what Deftones are capable of, these eleven tracks will show you with ease and leave you wanting more.

I personally really enjoy the heavy riff, and intense screaming vocals of when girls telephone boys, also Minerva is really good, but I think Needles & Pins is even better.

Guess what? This band has changed or "evolved" over the years, yet still sound like DEFTONES. This makes them true geniuses and truly amazing artists. Like all their albums, Self titled is simply amazing. This band is very sincere in everything they put out and they keep the ball rolling with some great material! DEFTONES stole my heart once again. Love you guys!

If we thought White Pony was radical, we're going to have to think again. This album was written in a similar way as White Pony, letting the songs come naturally. However, the same trick isn't always as good the second time. This album is a lot less united, but also offers a new heavy sound that they never showed before. This album features Stef using a sevenstring for the first time, tuned to G#. The band has almost completely shed its nu-metal label as they tread into new territory. Best album artwork, too! Hexagram - 9/10 I LOVE this track. It gets better every time I listen to it. It's very technical and its timing confuses me every time. The riffing in the chorus is awesome, courtesy of Stef Carpenter. My only criticism is that there are 4 verses, 2 choruses, and no real bridge. It's an odd song structure, but still a great track. Needles And Pins - 9/10 This track has a really gnarly guitar riff. It kinda makes me sad how short this track is because I want more! Minerva - 3/10 Although lots of people love this track, I could never get into it. That's just me. Good Morning Beautiful - 4/10 Although this track features heavy sevenstring riffing in the chorus, the song doesn't have great continuity. Deathblow - 6/10 Very unique song. It's soft, but it's a good kind soft. When Girls Telephone Boys - 10/10 Best track, by and large. Crushing guitar riff in the chorus, and Chino screams through the whole thing. It's not like Deftones' older heavy songs as this one really takes its time and is paced slower. Overall, I think it sounds better. Battle Axe - 7/10 Good track. It's kind of a one-riff-wonder, but I like it. Lucky You - 6/10 I like the random Trip Hop song in here. It only really features Frank Delgado, Chino, and Chi Cheng. Good track though. Bloody Cape - 8/10 Crushing song. It's heavy, but it's more melodic. Chino saves the screaming for the end, which I find to be a good stylistic choice. Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event - 4/10 Like the title suggests, this song is a little boring. Moana - 6/10 This song is a little static. The best part is the opening guitar lick.
