  • Eh....

I suppose I'll be the first to criticize. I'm not going to be in awe of this simply because it's 65/66 Dylan. I know it's more historical to some than entertaining, and that's fine. However, history doesn't make it worth listening to. I guess this essentially made me realize I'm not as big a Bob Dylan fan as I thought. I don't understand how people can be so mesmerized by the same stuff they've heard their entire lives with just slight differences. I mean...the songs are not even THAT different from the ones we've heard for decades. And they want $60.00 for this? I'm sure behind all the transfixed faces of die-hard fans there is a sense of disappointment (they are refusing to express) wishing there was more new material rather than just the same old tunes.

Quite possibly the worst singer in the history of American music to get a record deal. Decent song writing skills, but a horrible singer.

Great to hear, and I suppose Dylan had to go through all the variations of these great songs to get to the best final versions. Most are fascinating, but lack the final drama of the released recordings. BTW: it stinks that "Sad Eyed" and "Desolation Row" cannot be bought individually. What is that about?

If you want a single definitive recording of each song, then by all means stick with the original versions of these three classic Dylan albums. This release is an opportunity to witness the evolution of the songs as they were being created in the studio, with time signatures, tempo, lyrics and arrangements changing from take to take. Yes, you're getting multiple versions of "the same song," but that's the point and the privilege here. You get to be a fly on the wall in the studio as Dylan experiments and reworks the material on its way to becoming the final product that we know and love. If this sort of thing interests you, then fork over your hard earned money and enjoy a fascinating peek into Dylan's creative process. (And don't skimp and get the two disc version--it defeats the purpose by limiting the tracks and not allowing you to observe the changes and development of the works in progress, which is the whole point. If your budget permits, get the $600 version and listen to absolutely everything he recorded during this timeframe.)
  • THE GREATEST RELEASE OF ZIMMERMAN's MUSICAL DEPTH, A MUST HAVE!!

I think this is the most fascinating release of Dylan's music ever. Talk about a feast, it's outtakes and alternate takes of all the greatest songs off his two best albums, Highway 61 Revisited An Bringing It All Back Home. There are 21 takes of Like a Rolling Stone, one of the greatest songs ever written. Take #16 is an all acoustic guitar version six minutes long that captures and essence of the song that is only background music to the release version yet is so brilliant it's unbelievable. The next take is a jazzy version with Kioper laying out riffs on organ. I've only gotten a third of the way through this but I have to tell you, if you're Dylan fan you cannot be without this. It shows you what a musical genius he was besides being one of the greatest poetic minds of the century. By the big one, all 111 songs. If you don't you will after listening to the "best of". I give this 96 out of 100.

If you’re a huge fan (like me) of this remarkable 14 month spate of unforgettable music skip the virtual and get your hands on the box set. It features a slipcase containing a beautiful book of photos and thoughtfully designed CD album/booklet. A wonderful way to chronicle the creation of these three groundbreaking albums.

The rest of us can manage with Blonde on Blonde. Instead of 5 or 6 outtakes from the same sessions, I much prefer the release (BoB) versions, plus concert tracks from 10, 20, 30 years later. Even so, I can't justify anything less than 4 stars, even if only for its contribution to the historical record.

If the early released tracks are any indication, I feel certain this will be a trip backstage at the Smithsonian. What joy these Bootleg Series collections have brought me. Thank you Bob for opening up the vault. Can't wait to hear more!!!!
