Description

This BBC WGBH/Boston Co-Production features an all-star cast including Romola Garai (Atonement) as Emma, Jonny Lee Miller (Eli Stone) as Mr. Knightley, and Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Book of Eli) as Mr. Woodhouse. Beautiful, clever, and rich Emma Woodhouse is convinced she is good at matchmaking after her older sister and her governess both marry suitable husbands. Certain of her talents, Emma plays a dangerous game as she persuades her new friend, the young, pretty and socially inferior Harriet to reject an advantageous marriage proposal to a local farmer in favour of dashing Mr Elton. So begins a story which challenges Emma's naivety and her social preconceptions. Fresh and funny, this perceptive adaptation brings Jane Austen's comic masterpiece to life.

I was happy to find that this was the full version of this Emma BBC series. This is my favorite version of Emma and I have Hulu plus and I tried to watch it on Hulu plus because they have it but the version that they have is a shortened version. I was very irritated to find out that a lot of my favorite parts were cut out. I then came to iTunes and downloaded this and was very happy to find the full version here!

This is a cute little show to watch with the girls. This version is definitely better than the movie they made out of this, with Gwyneth Paltrow. That one left me confused. This one makes sense. I don't know how else to explain how I felt about the two Emma film productions.
  • A surprisingly Wonderful Rendition

“Emma” is, in fact, my favorite Jane Austen book and this adaptation does it justice. From the music, to the acting, and to the cinematography it was just a wonderful ride. The pacing was quick and constantly progressing (no pointless/useless segments), but never too fast. In addition, the adaptation was largely accurate to the book…though they did take certain liberties…especially in the introduction. But even those liberties were nice touches that added to the core of the story and helped build connection. The actors and actresses played their roles convincingly and charmingly. It did not feel like people “just-doing-another-Jane-Austen-adaption”. It felt like a legitimate drama done by people that love the story. There is one double-sided coin that must be mentioned, though. This adaptation really brings out the connection between Emma and Mr. Knightley more so (or perhaps made it more clear?) than is soaked in on a first reading of the actual book. This is a good thing. However, it did mean that some of the side-plot details were glazed over or made less prominent. And that can be a good thing or a bad thing. Either way, though it was more than satisfactory…in fact, it was rather I opening and made me fall in love with the tale that much more. The one major (and I say that loosely) quip I do have is that the end…though satisfactory, really was too rushed. It there were important details that they could have focused on a bit more, such as the revelation and evolving friendship between Emma and Ms. Fairfax. But still, even with that, this film was beautiful and definitely a keeper.

Beautifully filmed, acted, and plotted. One of the best adaptations I've ever watched. Emma is just so delightful and perfectly imperfect. don't miss out on it.
  • Beautiful adaptation…expresses the novel’s depth of character

As one who has read Emma many times, I’ve always been sadly disappointed with film adaptations…until this version. The characters and the story lines are quite closely aligned to those penned by Jane Austen. Rich and complex and quirky, the humor and angst of the characters comes through with such simple clarity. A joy to watch. Like the other viewers, I agree…it was over too soon.
  • Simply marvellous

One of the best Jane Austin screen adaptations. The only other one on par with this is the A&E Pride and Prejudice. Very enjoyable to watch.

...it does not grasp the viewer as quickly as others. If you have watched and enjoyed other Austen film adaptations and enjoyed them then there is no reason to not watch this. BTW, my favorite is P&P miniseries...a must see work...
