Description

In the highly anticipated first season of Dollhouse, Echo (Eliza Dushku) is an “Active,” a member of a highly illegal and underground group who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Confined to a secret facility known as the “Dollhouse,” Echo and the other Actives including Sierra and Victor carry out engagements assigned by Adelle, one of the Dollhouse leaders. The engagements cater to the wealthy, powerful, and connected, and require the Actives to immerse themselves in all manner of scenarios — romantic, criminal, uplifting, dangerous, comical, and the occasional “pro bono” good deed. After each scenario, Echo, always under the watchful eye of her handler Boyd, returns to the mysterious Dollhouse where her thoughts, feelings, and experiences are erased by Topher, the Dollhouse’s genius programmer. Echo enters the next scenario with no memory of before. Or does she?

I finally got around to watch Dollhouse last year because I was on a Joss Whedon kick and wanted to check out his other stuff besides the Avengers and Agents of SHIELD. I'm glad that I did. Dollhouse is another great gem created by Joss Whedon. The show has a really cool premise about people who can wipe and imprint others (called Dolls) with false memories, skills, and personalities for certain jobs. The main character of the show is called Echo (played by Eliza Dushku), one of the Dolls (or Actives) at the LA Dollhouse. She can be someone's perfect assasin, lover, and so on. I hate the fact that Fox cancelled yet another awesome show.

As a firefly fan I recognized the way the theme of Dollhouse was done revisiting the issue of how bad medical research and mind control can ruin the world we live in. I was actually very impressed. The casting, dialog, and environment make a show that is entertaining and interesting while introducing multiple social issues related to the Dollhouse reality. It's a story of people who have their minds blanked because they were unable to cope with memories or problems in their life for a contracted time and then have their lives restored in extreme comfort. During this time they have their minds repeatedly wiped clean and imprinted with different personalities created for their engagements. In theory this sounds like a great deal but the show explores the ramifications of what this technology would realistically lead to. The first season explains the technology and the "intended" business model of a dollhouse along with all of the complications involved.

it's much better if you read some of the scientific journals/articles online that tell "dollhouse" technologies are possible now. responding to review re: episode 3.. it is a veiled reference to certain pop singers (catch the mouse reference?) being the product of MK-ULTRA. The whole show either makes fun of certain conspiracies or plays them out. either way - Whedon is brilliant.
  • Great series.

Ok. If you are going to try this show out you have to skip episode 3, where they imprint Echo as a backup singer. That is some of the dumbest TV ever made. But it gets better and better after that. So remember. This is a great sic-fi show. I don't know what is up with episode 3 but if you can get past it you are in for a nice ride. Just when you think it is predictable, it takes a turn you did not expect.

Love this show and I'm hoping it will continue. Like all of his other work, Joss Whedon really outdid himself.
