Description

Produced by Oprah Winfrey, award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma), and Melissa Carter, Queen Sugar chronicles the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings in Saint Josephine, Louisiana. After a family tragedy forces them back together, the Bordelons must navigate the triumphs and struggles of their complicated lives in order to run an ailing sugarcane farm in the Deep South. The drama begins as Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner Unforgettable), a savvy woman living a upscale Los Angeles lifestyle, returns to her family home and reunites with her siblings, Nova (Rutina Wesley True Blood), a world-wise journalist and activist and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe Awkward), a formerly incarcerated young father in search of redemption. Their newly inherited farm forces the siblings to rely on one another as they rebuild both the land and their relationships.

This is the best new drama I've seen in years. Whether it moves you to joy or despair, it refuses to let you stay there for too long, pulling you in unexpected and revelatory directions with each new scene. Ava DuVernay brings her epic, cinematic vision to the television format, ellevating the medium while also using the medium to her advantage; she's free to linger on the details of her character's lives in a way that film doesn't always allow. After the first episode you'll know who everyone is and you'll be rooting for them. By the tenth episode, you'll believe in the Bordelon family so thoroughly that it will feel less like you're watching a television show and more like you're a voyeur, an unseen neighbor or long lost member of the family, your emotions and your hopes in sync with those of the main cast. Truly brilliant television deserving of all the praise. Must watch for storytellers, writers, and basically anyone with a pulse.
  • Queen Sugar is cinematic television

Queen Sugar's gorgeous cinematography and its well-devolped, well-acted characters elevate each episode to cinematic quality. I was hooked from the very first episode at the scene where there was nothing but silence; the actors and how the camera captured the moment was powerful beyond words. I think the magic of Queen Sugar is that it shows the beauty in this place and this family by presenting them in all their parts - as victims and as saviours, a voice of reason and someone who's lost, with flaws that take longer than one episode to overcome. It allows for a lot of different dynamics as the story unfolds. It's an award-worthy show; well done to all those involved.

I ended season 1 and desperately wished I had season 2 ready to watch. Truly superb writing and acting that shows fully realized human beings.

In a world of fake reality shows and unrealistic dramas, it's nice to watch a show that speaks and responds like a real family. The performances, the cinematography, and the directing... A+ for sure. Ava DuVernay should be proud of this! I love Queen Sugar!
