Not an awful film but not great either.

I think directors sometimes become so focused on the details of story telling that they forget to consider the experience of the first-time viewer. Maybe it's too predictable or a bit confusing in places, and Cake is an imperfect movie in those ways. But viewing a movie a second time makes the first issue moot, and perhaps forgivable, and confusion is usually cleared up by the second viewing. If there's merit to the story then you begin to see what detail the writer and director were attempting to convey. From the story-telling perspective this is the experience I had watching Cake. Nevertheless, what makes Cake worth watching the first time, and multiple times thereafter, are the performances, with Aniston and Barraza truly standout.

Jennifer Aniston did a great job. True. The movie was solid. True. The supporting cast was really good as well. The movie was just so danged depressing. It was like a female version of Rudy except without a huge payoff at the end. I'm not sure when I'll be able to drive without thinking of this movie now. I recommend renting it if you want to see it. It is definately not a feel good romp.

I've never been an Aniston fan but I might be now. She portrayed dual agonies of a child's death and unremitting physical pain so well. Bravo to her and the actress who played her housekeeper as she was marvelous too.

Very deep, thought provoking, heartbreaking story. A true tribute to those who suffer from loss, pain, and tragedy. Can't believe it didn't get more recognition!

Worth etching for the performances - Jennifer Aniston and Adriana Barraza were excellent. But the movie moved excruciatingly slowly - ponderous and fairly predictable.

I really didn’t like this movie!!! Very boring, made me snore sometimes while watching it. Jennifer Aniston acting is ok, but her role and the storyline is very clichĂ©, you’ve seen this movie before, many, many times. This movie resembles a lot of the latest very pretentious Brazilian drama movies, like “Neighboring Sounds” (2013) and “Casa Grande - Or The Ballad Of Poor Jean” (2014). Latest Brazilian movies are even worse than “Cake”, so that means a lot.

This film is so smart, so well-paced, and full of moments that made me pause. Aniston really should have won something for this performance. It’s seamless.
