Description

An odd couple of sorts, introspective and stern Alvin (Rudd) and his girlfriend’s brother, Lance (Hirsch), dopey and insecure, leave the city behind to spend the summer of 1988 repainting the traffic lines on a desolate country highway where the surrounding areas have been ravaged by wildfire. In this solitary backdrop, the two bicker and joke with each other as they reflect on their relationships with women, resulting in a clumsy fall head first into an unlikely friendship.

  • An overachiever.

This film doesn’t try to be a big, profound, life-changing experience, and as a result it’s one of the most satisfying films I’ve seen in a while. Rudd & Hirsch have an easy and genuine rapport that keeps this film engaging and worthwhile.

I really enjoyed this film. I saw it during a local film festival. It has a different feeling than your "typical" comedy. The characters are moving, the story touching and unexpected.

It’s OK. It’s not a bad film. It illuminates how fragile men can be, and the ways they try to manage their fragility. But it’s a little tedious in a serious, Scandinavian sort of way. About three fourths of the way through the film, while I was being bored, I think I must have missed something subtle and important. If I’d noticed it I think I’d have a higher opinion of the film. The film certainly implied that something significant had been understated. Maybe you’ll notice what I failed to. Good luck.

Hang in there….it gets better as it moves along. And once it does, you don't want it to end.

Don't waste your money. Although I think Paul Rudd is an amazing actor, this movie never goes anywhere. Theres no plot and the story drags out. Honestly one of the worst movies i've seen in a while. I'm not sure why critics rated this so high, but there is obviously some bias to the rating system.
  • Not a Comedy

You will laugh a few times if you have not fallen asleep, but this is an art film or character study. The film work is beautiful. The acting is fine. But the story is paced extremely slow. One of the fastest pace parts of the film is when you watch a caterpillar crawl across the ground. Unless you are a film student, you can skip this one and safely know you have not missed anything.

I wish I could get the 1hr 33 mins of my life back with how boring this movie is… how it got amazing RT ratings is beyond me.

If you have time to sit and watch something that is boring. Try it. It will fulfill that need.

Thoughtful, kind, trusting and just overall a beautiful film. David Gordon Green lets the actors exist, and trusts that the audience will be on the ride with them. The beauty is in the silence, in the story, in the smallest moments. You have to allow yourself to step outside of the 'blockbuster' films and come into a real world- real people- real scenarios. If you are a fan of Wes Anderson's films you will be a fan of this as well.
