Description

A subjective documentary that explores the numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining (1980). The film may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire debate, speculation, and mystery. Five very different points of view are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic reenactments. Together they’ll draw the audience into a new maze, one with endless detours and dead ends, many ways in, but no way out. NEITHER THIS FILM, NOR ANY VIEW OR OPINION EXPRESSED IN IT, NOR THE CONTEXT IN WHICH FILM FOOTAGE AND IMAGES ARE USED, IS APPROVED OR ENDORSED BY, OR IS IN ANY WAY ASSOCIATED WITH, THE KUBRICK 1981 TRUST, STANLEY KUBRICK’S FAMILY, WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC., OR ANYONE ELSE CONNECTED WITH THE MAKING OF THE MOTION PICTURE THE SHINING (“THE SHINING FILMMAKERS”). THE VIEWS AND OPINIONS EXPRESSED IN THIS DOCUMENTARY FILM ARE SOLELY THOSE OF THE COMMENTATORS IN IT AND DO NOT REFLECT THE VIEWS OF STANLEY KUBRICK OR THE SHINING FILMMAKERS.

Sounds like a bunch of first year film students trying to be deep and philosophical. I lost count of how many times my eyes rolled out of my head.

Unbelievable Sophormic Jr. High School Media Class Taught by TA on "Subliminal" "Art" implantation, if only anyone involved actually had a life, they may have "discovered" Kubric's intentions beyond the obvious aka Mythos, but looking for anything "Phallic" tends to to finding many things phallic, say, like buildings, hot dogs, pencils or if you slow the film down, wait, wait, wait pause and with the guy just standing there in a busy office, ... there! There! the thing in front of the guy that a thing on his desk in front of him is a Phallus! My three year old nephew would have responded that thing is what that thing is. Worse film i have ever seen expecting a smart one.

Perhaps I should have read the description and reviews more closely, but I thought this film would be more of a standard making-of. It is mostly streaming commentary that dives deeply into the near subliminal things Kubrick incorporated into the Shining. There is a strong conspiratorial aspect to this, and it stretches credibility. Viewer beware!

I find all but the first theory to be unlikely. You could also get all the information in this documentary after reading a few theories on reddit.

As my dog gets older, she sadly occasionally loses control of her bowels. Often as I am cleaning up her mess I think to myself "Well at least this is a better use of my time than watching Room 237." It's 90 minutes of stupid ideas as told by stupid people. We do get to learn though that one narrator was definitely holding his belt buckle with his left hand, yes - he's quite sure it was the left hand, while watching The Shining for the first time. That's pretty much the highlight of this "film".
  • WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Steven King’s name is not said, not once! You can’t analyze the movie if you don’t know your King from your Kubrick!

Fans of the film speculate for 100 minutes; some of it is articulate, much of it is absurd. No more, no less.
