Description

The Queen of Versailles is a character-driven documentary about a billionaire family and their financial challenges in the wake of the economic crisis. With the epic proportions of a Shakespearean tragedy, the film follows two unique characters, whose rags-to-riches success stories reveal the innate virtues and flaws of the American Dream. The film begins with the family triumphantly constructing the largest privately owned house in America, a 90,000 sq. ft. palace. Over the next two years, their sprawling empire, fueled by the real estate bubble and cheap money, falters due to the economic crisis. Major changes in lifestyle and character ensue within the cross-cultural household of family members and domestic staff.

“The Queen of Versailles” upholds Hemingway’s demystified view and testifies to the curious logic of class in the new gilded age. The Siegels are proud of how much they have, embracing the idea that what distinguishes them from others — from Westgate’s customers or the members of its sales force, from friends and family in the heartland — is not quality but quantity. They are just like everybody else; they just have more. Mrs. Siegel treats herself to a tin of caviar on Christmas morning, but she also likes Chicken McNuggets and diet soda. David and Jackie Siegel are no better than any of the rest of us. That may go without saying. But the reverse is also true, and Ms. Greenfield’s real achievement is to disarm the reflex of superiority that the spectacle of her subjects’ way of life may provoke in some viewers. Schadenfreude and disgust may be unavoidable, but to withhold all sympathy from the Siegels is to deny their humanity and shortchange your own. Marvel at the ornate frame, mock the vulgarity of the images if you want, but let’s not kid ourselves. If this film is a portrait, it is also a mirror. - A.O.Scott,

She seems nice. I don't feel sorry for them. I wish they could see what their true assets are in their family. He pretty much misses the mark on everything. Yes, rules change all the time. Surely, as a businessman, he had to know the good times wouldn't last. Anyway, I wish their family well.

This movie is somewhat worth watching if you want to laugh your head off at the eccentricity of ignorant 'folk'. The Queen of versailles herself: she is as outrageous as her outrageously large fake chest. Completely over the top! She may be book smart, but that is about it!!! She is nauseating and a pathetic representation of a woman in today's society. She spends money with no conscience... Hey, she found a sugar daddy to marry her... she talks about loving him, but the way she spends his money, I think that is all she really loves. Her ultimate ignorance and lack of intelligence is proven when she talks about the money for bail out that should have gone to common people, like her??!!!?????!!???? The 'King" himself: Let alone that he looks like her father, he married a trophy and a gold digger! I want to feel sorry for him, but I can't. He as as nauseating as she is. He seems almost narcissistic. They spend money like crazy on 'things' that are not necessary, with no thought at the fact that they may be vulnerable just like everybody else. See this movie if you want to see what fools do. Yet make sure you have ginger ale on hand.... seriously nauseating!

If you want to watch a documentary about a terrible mom and wife well this is for you. Stupid woman, bad marriage. It irritated me so much. She is a total airhead. This should be titled "More Money than Sense". That goes for the husband and the wife. Maybe "The Idiots of Versailles" is also a good title.

I found this documentary painful to watch. There was a complete and utter lack of compassion generated for the people in the film. This woman was an engineer? She certainly hid her education well.

I just wasted money! I can't even bring myself to watch this nonsense. People flaunting their wealth! Really? This just infuriates me. I wish I could get a refund- I'm 15 mins in and turning off!

My mouth was open the entire movie. But couldn't get enough of this train wreck. Not going to lie wish there was a second one.
