Description

Behind every great man there lies a teacher, and this was certainly true of Bruce Lee, who claimed as his mentor a martial arts expert named Ip Man (1893-1972). A genius of Wushu (or the Chinese martial arts school), Ip Man grew up in a China nearly ripped to pieces by racial hatred, nationalistic strife and warfare. He rose like a phoenix above these ashes, however, courtesy of his participation in matches against various Wushu masters and kung-fun warriors - ultimately training martial arts icons such as Lee. This biopic starring Donnie Yen and directed by Wilson Yip dramatizes Ip's life story.

This movie is absolutely awesome and I’d recommend watching it. And really, I can’t understand why it’s rated R. Of course there is a lot of violence throughout the movie but it’s not gory, crazy violence you’d expect from Rated R movies. There’s blood but definitely not more than there needs to be. If you want a heads up on anything you might find disturbing though, it’s that a few people get bones audibly and somewhat visually broken, a person gets shot through the head while another gets shot in the shoulder, and there are intense beatings. Definitely violent, but in my opinion it’s more of a PG-13.

Astonishing that these little Ip Man films can be so good, but they are... well worth it.

Donnie Yen dominates in this fine portrait of Chinese martial arts great lp man. The film is set across the backdrop of the Japanese invasion of China. As the brutal Janapese occupation unfolds, lp man loses wealth, but learns an enhanced patriotism for his fellow Chinese. The climactic fight is not very nuanced, but thrilling nevertheless. This version is dubbed, but turn on the subtitles to fully understand what is going on.
  • Don't buy if you want the Cantonese version

This movie is great. I love it. It is a great drama. My only complaint is that I bought this movie to have the audio in Cantonese, not English. It even says on the page Cantonese, but it only has English with no option to change it. This is very frustrating as the Cantonese is much better than the english.

Great movie! Donnie Yen was amazing in the title role. I love the WWII historical backset. It really helped put things on perspective. This is a must see for any martial arts fan. Even you action junkies all love this one! Col. E

Based on a true story, movie had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. Liked it so much that I bought the Eason Chan song "Ip Man in the Wind" to remind me of movie.

I seen no warning that the movie was non-English recorded. Due to this, the lips of the characters does not match the audio. I tried using the Closed Caption but it does not match the audio. I cannot tell if the audio or the caption is the correct translation of what the characters are saying.
