Description

François Truffaut’s first feature, The 400 Blows (Les quatre cents coups), is also his most personal. Told through the eyes of Truffaut’s life-long cinematic counterpart, Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), The 400 Blowssensitively re-creates the trials of Truffaut’s own difficult childhood, unsentimentally portraying aloof parents, oppressive teachers, petty crime, and a friendship that would last a lifetime. The film marks Truffaut’s passage from leading critic of the French New Wave to his emergence as one of Europe’s most brilliant auteurs.

I adore old films because they rely more on dialogue and less special effects a movie with substance is a movie worth watching. This feels like stepping into a time machine a simpler time without the leave it to beaver dialogue . French films don’t hide the dirt they embrace all that is human and the characters are 3 dimensional just as in real life we are not all just one sided. Great film that doesn’t sugar coat things.

A movie so real and brutally honest. It felt like a 3 hour epic at a much shorter length. Though movies these days usually try to mask reality with the happy go lucky good always triumphs. That can leave me feeling braindead after awhile. This is a wake up call.

This movie is a true classic and despite being french, very easy to get into. The pacing is excellent and the ending is probably one of the best movie endings of all times. I know that sounds like hyperbole but trust me on this one.

For me, by far, the best of the French New Wave films. Touching, moving and brutal coming of age film. Beautifully shot and wonderfully acted out by the 14 year old Jean-Pierre Léaud. François Truffaut showed the world just what films could be.

Wow these type of films are rare in the making. I stumbled upon this a while ago and was blown away by the direction, acting, and how well the story line flowed. Antoine Doniel is what every kid is and wants to be a free, rebellious, curious spirit. What a great character, and reading how most of the actors lines he did were improv, simply amazing.

Great film of the French New Wave. So sad, and yet so real. Stuff like this doesn't get made in the Hollywood crap machine.
