Description

Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly take their boldest experimentation underground--risking their careers by pushing the boundaries of science to serve their own curiosity and ambition. The result is Dren, an amazing, strangely beautiful creature of uncommon intelligence and an array of unexpected physical developments. At first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams. But as she grows and learns at an accelerated rate, her existence threatens to become their worst nightmare.

My friend and I decided to throw this on and just make up some drinking rules to go along with it. Once we heard what they decided to name the creature, we chose to drink every time they say her awful name. Got really drunk during the scene where they are looking for her towards the end. Also, the complete lack of PPE in this movie was the scariest pet of the film.

Yep, it’s pretty stupid from start to grueling finish.

Even as a hard core lover or the horror genre, I still couldn’t finish the movie. Not because it was scary, but because a lot of scenes and reactions don’t fit each other. Then it’s like the writers were worried about the lack of disgust you sometimes get when watching scary movies, so they panicked and threw in this off the wall scene. Maybe for a shock factor? It just wasn’t right. For these people to be where they are in life both professionally and personally, there’s just a lot about this movie that doesn’t add up. ( I’m being vague cause if you’re still itching to watch it I won’t ruin your fun.) the movie is just not my cup of tea and I’d never recommend it.

I think this movie creeps some people out due to some select scenes and they review the entirety of the movie based on what they thought of it while watching that scene. It’s definitely rewatchable for me as a horror junkie, but not a movie for people not obsessed with the genre. The cinematography doesn’t wow and the score is forgettable, but the noises Dren make are both cute and creepy. And that’s the draw of this movie, having a monster that is simultaneously attractive and terrifying. This is one of those that if the trailer intrigues you, you’ll probably like it. Use the trailer as that indicator on whether to buy or not. This is a movie that has high praise from critics, but low reviews from general audiences. If I were to grade this, I would give it a B-

Shocking, sci-fi thriller that didn't disappoint. Just when I thought I knew what was to come, the plot thickened. Excellent film. When science goes horribly wrong. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

How did this do so well on Rotten Tomatoes? Just goes to show that not only can the critics get it wrong, they can get it way wrong. This movie is neck & neck with The Happening as the worst movie ever created (in my opinion).
