Description

At the height of WWII, a group of German officers hatched a plot to assassinate Hitler and seize control of the military command in order to end the war. The operation was code-named "Valkyrie", for the emergency plan that was meant to be used in case of a revolt against the Nazi government. This plan had been modified by the conspirators to ensure their success, but for various reasons the plot failed when finally carried out on 20 July 1944. The conspirators of the inner circle were shot after a kangaroo trial or sentenced to death soon after. Starring Tom Cruise as the Colonel who was the main force behind the conspiracy, the distinguished cast also includes Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp and Eddie Izzard. Directed by Bryan Singer.

  • Well-Written and Well-Acted Historical Drama

Valkyrie is a well-written and well-acted drama that is admirably accurate in its historical detail. Tom Cruise does a good job playing the taciturn, yet charismatic von Stauffenberg. Bill Nighy is also very good. The movie balances character development, storytelling, and drama as well as can be expected in a historically accurate drama. One point that I think other reviews are misrepresenting: it isn't true that all of the people involved in the plot to assassinate Hitler and then negotiate for peace with England, the USA, and other countries fighting Germany were motivated by revulsion against Hitler's bigotry, the mass murders and other atrocities they had to commit under his orders. Many of the people involved in the plot were motivated to kill Hitler in large part because Germany was losing the war, and Hitler was against negotiating for peace. The motivations of many of the plotters were not as lofty and humane as many seem to claim now, although many of them hated the Nazis and their bigoted ideology. However, the point I'm making does not take away at all from the bravery and patriotism of the people involved.

There’s no other better sacrifice to witness these men for the better change of the entire world! These men made the ultimate sacrifice to end the tyranny regime that killed millions of people! Definitely worth watching a hundred times!
  • This was not a typical “Tom Cruise” movie

This was a good thriller. Based on a true story. Though it portrays a hero, with further investigation I found out the true main character was actually a Jew hater, so though I am happy that some Germans attempted to get rid of hitler I’m not happy about the fact that they truly didn’t care about Jews but their own self interest. Great acting!
  • iTunes Extras needed

Awesome movie, but can you add the Special Features and iTunes Extras and also upgrade to 4K so people can watch them online? This is really annoying to me when the Special Features appear on the Home Video releases of movies, but not on iTunes because technology is advancing everyday.

This movie is like a history lesson, but it's not boring, it's very well done .... I love the fact they went to actual locations where this took place in Germany ... Great acting, and it tells a very important story in our history ...

Tom Cruise turns out to be a spot-on evocateur of von Stauffenberg. The film portrays this historically important event with sensitivity and faithful documentation. The quandary these Germans were in and the bravery they exhibited can now be understood around the world.
  • Most typically underrated film of 2008

Valkyrie was my favorite film of 2008. I looked forward to it and was blown away. For people that are expecting some typical Cruise action flick your are morons, and for the people that say it’s boring, what were you expecting? It’s a dramatization of a historical event! If you do the research the film is as close to 100% accurate as you could possibly expect from Hollywood. The script was perfect, the acting was subtle and brilliant, technically the film was flawless, and the story is utterly moving and haunting. For anyone with half a brain, who respects veterans and who dislikes the horrors of World War II or the holocaust this is a film I’d pick up. For the rest of you go watch Pacific Rim

Up far and away the best WWII movie I've ever seen. I really don't like Tom Cruise and this trailer didn't seem very appealing. But his performance in this movie and the way he plays the Colonel is amazing. Never seen a movie like this, never seen a performance likes this. Watch this movie 7 times.

Everyone should see this movie. I didn't like the fact that Tom didn't use an accent. I also thought the movie was going to be in German with English sub titles but great story telling, plot and good acting made up for those small things
