Description

Legendary producer-director Howard Hawks teams with two equally legendary stars, John Wayne and Robert Mitchum, in this classic Western drama. Mitchum plays to perfection an alcoholic but gutsy sheriff who relentlessly battles the dark side of the wild West, ruthless cattle barons and crooked "businessmen." The Duke gives an equally adept performance as the sheriff's old friend who knows his way around a gunfight. Filled with brawling action and humour, El Dorado delivers the goods. James Caan and Ed Asner co-star.

  • Anyone else see the connection to the movie Elf?

Love this movie, simple and good. I write that it connects to elf because Bart Jason “Ed Asner” plays Santa and Mississippi “James Caan” plays Walter Buddy’s dad. Always interesting to see connections in Hollywood over decades. I won’t ruin the movie for those who have not seen it but well worth a watch to see Hollywood legends compete on screen to save a small familys’ ranch from a greedy criminal.

It's fun, it's quirky, it's got some basic western action, some small romance. The characters are all interesting and unique. Little long, but I like it.

Yes, Rio Bravo came first and was an awesome John Wayne western classic, but El Dorado is a masterpiece! The characters in El Dorado have great chemistry, the pacing is good and the action scenes are awesome! If you are a fan of classic westerns and especially if you are a fan of the duke, this movie is for you!

An excellent film with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum, one of the few movies they did together. It is an excellent movie, well worth watching. Witty, funny, and yet one of the more intense western dramas ever made. The movie was very popular but never received any consideration of the film Academy primarily because of John Wayne’s conservative politics. Shame on you, Hollywood.

As others here have pointed out, El Dorado is in a sense a remake on Rio Bravo but done differently and with a great cast. A must see film

One of my four favorite John Wayne movies. (Along with "The Searchers", "The Cowboys" and "The Quiet Man") Dean Martin, Angie Dickinson and Ricky Nelson are all great. Classic Western. Well written, funny with a great musical scene from two legends (Martin & Nelson).

El Dorado lacks in no area, whether it be action, casting, plot, or directing. This movie is simply one of the greatest movies ever made. It is never boring and I never tire of watching this magnificent film.

I can watch this movie again and again. The comedy is spot-on; the action is fulfilling; the romance isn't half-bad, especially for a Wayne movie (although Caan's is rather subtle at times). See this movie! You won't regret it. It's one of the best westerns ever made.
  • Wayne at his best

Wayne is at his best just being himself. Cast is perfect, the story is simple, it's bad guys vs. good guys. In short it's a Howard Hawks masterpiece.
