Description

Double Academy Award winners' Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood confront each other from opposite sides of the law in A Perfect World, an acclaimed, multi-layered manhunt saga (directed by Eastwood) that rumbles down Texas backroads toward a harrowing collision with fate. Costner plays Butch Haynes, a hardened prison escapee on the lam with a young hostage (T.J. Lowther in a remarkable film debut) who sees in Butch the father figure he never had. Eastwood is wily Texas Ranger Red Garnett, leading deputies and a criminologist (Laura Dern) in a statewide pursuit. Red knows every road and pothole in the Panhandle. What's more, he knows the elusive Haynes-because their paths have crossed before.

This easily ranks as one of Costner’s best performances as a troubled escaped convict with a sense of right and wrong but a violent and troubled past. He exudes dangerous charisma and an unpredictable temper. Eastwood does equally impressive turns as lawman in the film and director behind the camera. It’s sometimes tragic, sometimes intense but also funny and even moving.

This review is an excerpt from my book “Killer B’s: The 237 Best Movies On Video You’ve (Probably) Never Seen,” which is available as an ebook on iBooks. If you enjoy this review, there are 236 more like it in the book (plus a whole lot more). Check it out! A PERFECT WORLD: It’s November, 1963—just weeks before JFK is due in Dallas, a cue that history is in the making. This time, however, it’s personal history, and as the film unfolds we realize it’s repeating itself. Butch (Costner) knows that little Philip (Lowther), age 8, raised by a strict, abandoned mother, needs a father figure—a strong male presence to teach him how to be a man: How to urinate on trees, shoot guns and be self-sufficient. Butch understands the kid. Hell, twenty years ago, he *was* this kid. And maybe he can help Philip turn out differently. But he’s kidnapped the kid—so underlying every second of their relationship is a sense of menace. How can we trust him? Turns out that the Geritol-swilling, no-nonsense Texas Ranger “Red” Garnett (Eastwood) was, in a weird twist of fate, a sort of similar surrogate father for Butch years earlier, altering the courses of both their fates. History does in fact begin repeating itself as Philip learns his lessons—maybe too well—and his own future trajectory hangs in the balance. The men’s fates are settled; they’re merely playing out their predestined drama. And while the law is concerned with Philip’s life, Butch seems to be the only one concerned with the boy’s psychological salvation. This tale of unexpected relationships, of the needs and responsibilities of fathers and sons, is complex, subtle and often disturbing; long but never dull, full of moments of pathos, compassion, humor, anger and long stretches of breath-clenching suspense. In a perfect world, it would have won several Oscars. Don’t miss it.

I loved this movie! Kevin Costner is brilliant and the little boy is so cute. Very good story line, and not your typical every-day movie.

I first saw this when I was nine years old, and I watched it again tonight, and to this day it hasn't lost a beat. The combination of Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood both giving Oscar-calibur performances is truly what made this movie a masterpiece. How it did not get nominated for a single Academy Award or even a Golden Globe is beyond my explanation. If you haven't seen it, see it now! Either download it here, or go to your nearest rental store... and then download it here after you've watched it. Cheers, Clint!
