Description

Master of horror John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing) directs this terrifying battle between humankind and ultimate evil. A group of graduate students and scientists uncover an ancient canister in an abandoned church, but when they open the container, they inadvertently unleash a strange liquid and an evil force on all humanity. As the liquid turns their co-workers into zombies, the remaining members realize they have released the most unspeakable of horrors, Satan himself, thus paving the way for the return of his father - the all-powerful anti-God. Terror mounts as the last two members of the team must fight to save an innocent world from a devilish fury that has festered for over seven million years.

I know the science in this is totally fabricaed but for me, I found it intreging how the created the true origin of what they are encountering. IMO its the science they create is the real star of the movie. The science is totally believable and gives the ability to let story in making the movie that much more real. The other part if really loved was Carpenter's framing the story enter twinded with the opening credits with that dark ommus under tone. No talking just imagirely and it's brave that Carpeter trusts the audiance will be able to understand what's leading up to actual movie start. Fior thise that make negative comments, While I respect your opinions but I really think folks that this movie was going to be based on some science or religous melding. It's supopse to do that, but it doesn't have to be true to be entertaining.

Unlike Saw and Paranormal Activity (newer and less scary crap), this movie builds suspense and foreboding. Still creeps the hell out of me when I see it. Yes there are cheesy scenes but it is definite a true horror movie

I remember watching this on halloween as a teenager by myself... It was a bad mistake. It terrified me and for some reason had an interesting story. The last 15 minutes was terrific and frantic with a twisted ending.
  • Waste of time out of my life.

This movie was stupid, boring and made no sense. How I was actually able to watch the whole thing is a miracle in itself. Really really lame movie.

This is a seriously creepy movie from start to finish. Even though it was made some time ago, it kicks butt when compared to movies made now. Even a silent, yet demented Alice Cooper is there to add a little atmosphere and folks, atmosphere is what this little gem is all about. Buy it, rent it, whatever. If you have the intelligence to appreciate the subtle difference between this and the usual blood/gore/no script/no acting garbage that's out there, you will thoroughly enjoy this.
  • Way Under-rated!!

When we look at the movies that Hollywood comes out with today, it makes me "era-sick" for the 80's! "Prince of Darkness" was extremely creative as well as fantastically eerie, but to enjoy it you must be a die hard John Carpenter fan. This is definitely in my top 5 Carpenter movie list along with: Big Trouble in Little China; The Thing; Escape From New York; and They Live. If you enjoy this movie try the others I have recommended you most likely won't be disappointed!!

I'm ashamed to admit, as a Carpenter fan, that I never knew about this movie. I'd see the box cover in passing and just never connected it to him. But here I found it on iTunes and checked it out, and not surprisingly, enjoyed it a lot. It's not his best work, but still classic Carpenter, music and all. It's an original idea with some good acting (and a little not so good acting), a creepy vibe and some great visuals. It's problem I think is that it tries a bit too hard, is a bit too big for its britches. Like Carpenter bit off a bit more than he could chew... This movie is good, but it's such an epic idea, it feels like they needed a bigger budget. You could easily say this about ANY of Carpenter's early work, but this did feel like something was lacking. Obviously the public feels this way too, since this movie wasn't a big hit, and I've never heard anyone talk about it in my horror movie circles. They're too busy praising the greatness of Halloween, The Thing, They Live and others to bother talking about this one. Not quite sure why, but it just felt like the IDEA is a bit too big for the way it's handled, and comes off looking cheap. This movie is really very similar in storyline to The Omen and The Exorcist, yet it doesn't have the same kind of epic gravitasse that those films have. This is a John Carpenter film, complete with synth-piano and 80's moustaches. So I think it kind of misses its mark... HOWEVER, I've seen it only once and it may very well grow on me and become a favorite. i LIKE movies that are old and cheesy and forgotten by most people! And this one, being Carpenter in his glorious 80's prime, is better than most. It has some truly disturbing visuals, creepy spooky stuff, cool music and a layer of smooth, melting cheese. Delicious!
