Great classic movie from the 70's The remake is a joke compared to this.

The blend of deadly serious drama with snippets of humor throughout make this movie rather unique. While it is definitely dated, and while the constant sniping and rudeness reveals a repellant side of New York, it still works quite well. I cannot think of another film that does such a great job of being both serious and funny (and I've been a movie buff for fifty years). The director, Joseph Sargent, was a prolific filmmaker with some 92 credits but he never had a breakthrough movie. This is among his best and the above blending elevates it above any other serious-subject movie that I've ever seen.

First time I have seen this, and I'm impresed. Its dated of course, but its also so well done all round that it is still very watchable. Its a very good thriller. One thing that pops out at me is the camera work, its really good.

Skip the forgettable 2009 remake, nothig beats Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw and gritty 1970s NYC in this classic!

The original Joseph Sergeant Thriller With Matthau, Shaw and Balsam is a true winner over the 2009 remake. This 1974 Film has Matthaus wry wit better than any movie until the Grumpy old men series three decades later. Shaw commands a powerful performance a year after The Sting and equally as impressive as his role a year later in Jaws. The musical score throughout the Picture brings out the old Manhatten days. This is a gem to watch!

Without a doubt one of my favorite films. I have viewed it too many times to recall, yet here I am having rented it again. Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw are phenomenal in their roles. The supporting cast is excellent! I will never grow tired of this one. The best of the best. Still one of my all time favorite films. Had to watch it again.

awesome movie! there are very few heist movies this good - it has a lot of action for 1974, not so much for 2012, but it's great nonetheless.

My dear ol' dad turned this movie to me and it's been my favorite ever since. Robert Shaw is one of my favorite actors and the writing for this movie hits the essence of my native city just right, although blatantly and successfully satirical. A must see!
