Description

This highly-acclaimed winner of five Emmy Awards is one of the best-loved movies ever made for television. It's the true story of a special relationship between two professional football players, Gale Sayers (Billy Dee Williams) and Brian Piccolo (James Caan). Both star players for the Chicago Bears, Sayers and Piccolo soon became roommates and best friends. When Sayers suffers a knee injury in mid-season, it is Piccolo who prods and inspires him to work toward a complete recovery. Then fate deals a cruel blow: Piccolo is stricken with malignant cancer. The constant support and friendship of Sayers plays an important role in Piccolo's heroic fight against the disease. Also starring Shelley Fabares (TV's Coach) as Piccolo's loving wife, BRIAN'S SONG is a moving and unforgettable film.

Will rewatch this movie in honor of Gayle Sayers. This was a favorite of mine as a teenager, and I'm not even a fan of football. The original Bromance Movie, it portrayed two unique and wonderful men. I remember it was a made-for-TV movie and was so beloved it got released into theaters after that. In L.A., no less. When does THAT ever happen?

Wow, this took me back. But it just doesn’t hold up. Horrible script. Comically dated production values. Predictable script. And the acting is abysmal. At one particularly dramatic moment that had a lull in the music, I leaned over to my wife and said “well, mercifully, at least they don’t have the predictable swelling violins in the musical score” and, as if on queue, the violins started playing. We would have turned it off, but we started to enjoy the kitsch. This is a movie that is so bad, it’s almost enjoyable. But be forewarned, it really is a horrible film.

I was 8 years old when this was broadcast - 1971? This movie was so good - I mean...how many kids that age would recall it? It was shown on ABC when they actually had a several movies that really stand out. The depth of emotion with the realism and passion really stood out. 😔 ABC billed it as Movie Of The Week as they did many others and many of them were quite memorable not only for the fine story but the fact that such a high caliber movie was on TV. Pray for the Wildcats comes to mind because it was so campy along with Boy In The Plastic Bubble...Their were quite a few 😲

One of the most powerful movies of that time period. I watched it as a child and everything about it, issues, support and unconditional love for a friend has always stayed with me. Still one of my all time favorites!!

We recently read this teleplay in my literature class and just finished watching the movie today. I was trying to hold in the crying in front of all my classmates! The teacher started weeping!
