And one of the most entertaining films of the entire motion capture era. The sense of humor transcends well, and the graphic violence doesn’t hurt either.
  • Just awful

Looks bad, inaccurate, and just a waste of money

As of reading this review, Beowulf currently has 3 out of 5 stars. While one half of the audience seems to give it points for its animation and 3D pop outs (I didn’t see this in 3D, but I’d love it if I could), the other half criticized it for the birdy it gives to the original poem. I admit, even with its 2 hour runtime, I still feel like it moves a bit fast and it’s climax in the end feels kinda meh. (Maybe that’s cause I was too busy enjoying the movie, but more on that later) And yes, the story was changed to be more sexual, some of the dialogue seemed sub par, and the storytelling at times has plenty of room for improvement. But even with that though, I still admit that I have a soft spot for this movie. Yes, it could’ve been much better as a movie and a tribute to the original poem, but when I first read the poem in the 10th grade, my first thought was how it could’ve been turned into a B movie that we would’ve seen out of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Yes, I can’t let my expectations get the better of me. But personally, I enjoy the surrealness of motion capture animation. And the action was fun to watch (although I can see how it was personally made for 3D). The dialogue scenes may not have been well executed, and the sexual elements where totally unnecessary. But it made it sort of amusing to watch. You can argue that it completely crashes with the epicness of the poem. But in a way, I feel like they weren’t entirely going for that. Yes, it does have some of the elements of an epic story, but with the amount of 3D gimmicks they had, I think their main purpose was to entertain, even if it meant not giving the Beowulf poem justice. And while it could’ve been better as a movie, I must agree with Roger Ebert when he said that film can be looked at as a satire of the perversion of ancient works in Hollywood form. Sure, that didn’t help the overall film, but it made it fun to watch and to trash when no one else was watching, kinda like the gang at Mystery Science Theater 3000. At one point in the movie, Beowulf was hanging onto a dragon and he yelled to it, “I’m going to have your head on a spike!” That immediately got me thinking, “That’s gonna take a huge spike.” The movie itself was the problem, but it provided me some pretty entertaining material. Sometimes you can make fun of it, and sometimes you’re just sitting there wondering what’s going to happen next. It’s a hard thing to pull off, and it sounds totally ridiculous. But somehow Beowulf manages to pull it off. I both poke fun and it, and somehow, respect it at the same time. If you take it seriously, you would probably give a 1 or 2 star review. And I can understand that. But if you’re not too critical about Beowulf and base your review based on its entertainment value, it’s plenty of good fun. Maybe I gave this 4/5 stars because I knew what was coming a long time before I watched it. But I very much liked it nether the less. Was it a great movie? No. Did I have a great time? Yes, I did!

I saw actors listed ...not as "voices of" ..actors and actresses I love ...I paid the price to see such an epic ...only to realize it is animation??? REALLY? Please state that prominently! I LOVE iTunes ...for years have ...but this one wasn't clear and makes me sceptical as I go forward...haven't had to be this far here ...but maybe with the world as it is, even iTunea has reverted to slights if it works?

It's good for a rental, but don't waste good money buying this. It's great animation, but it's way before the current technology ( i.e. "Lord of the Rings" and "Rise of the Planet of The Apes" to name a few ) which is light years ahead in motion capture/CGI. The facial expressions here look vacant.
