Description

The Game Plan tells the story of rugged superstar quarterback Joe Kingman (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), whose Boston-based team is chasing a championship. A "serial bachelor," Kingman is living the ultimate fantasy: he's rich, famous, and the life of the party. But this dream is suddenly sacked when he discovers the 7-year-old daughter (newcomer Madison Pettis) he never knew he had. Now, during the most important time in his career, he must figure out how to juggle his parties, practices, and dates with the newfound ballet classes, bedtime stories, and dolls that come with his daughter. Equally perplexed is his hard-edged mega-agent Stella (Kyra Sedgwick). Despite the often hilarious misadventures that come with being a new father, Joe discovers that there's more to life than money, endorsements, and thousands of adoring fans - the love and care of one very special small fan.

There are those live-action Disney movies I do like, and there are those I don't like. And "The Game Plan" is one of those live-action Disney movies I don't like. If you're going to write a film called "The Game Plan," center it on what? THE GAME PLAN; both on and off the field. In other words, let it be a metaphor for off-field life AND a literal feature when showing football action. First of all, there is no such thing as a one-man team. Joe Kingman (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) may be the most noted on the team, but it is still a TEAM effort--multiple persons. What about the rest of the team? Don't they each have a story and life to look into? They are reduced to being mindless, submissive bo-hunks. Aside from Morris Chestnut's character barely entering as the close friend. And Peyton (Madison Pettis)...she's just there for and as a cheap knock-off of "Dennis the Menace." I won't even get started on the rest, from Kingman's flat and tuneless agent to the self-absorbed sister-in-law who thinks she can do better at parenting. Altogether, the sequence is as follows: The bigshot lives high on the hog; the estranged child shows up and all heck breaks loose; they bond slowly and surely; a fatal flaw (i.e. secrets and lies) comes up, and they split up; and then at an unexpected monent they're back together again. Stale and repetitive, this subgenre. Even for a Disney film. Pollyanna, Newsies, Homeward Bound: the Incredible Journey, and In Search of the Castaways (I think) do better than this. Apparently, the writers did not do their homework, at all. Neither did the director nor the casting staff. Trying too hard to be a family film, especially by dumbing life down, does not get you very far. Only one star for this one--though it should be no stars.
