  • How Did They Lose $100 Million On This?

Great movie! Better than so many James Bond, MI, Kingsmen, Reacher movies. Great cinematography, acting, stunts, editing, music, even dialogue. And viewers love it. How could this not be a box office hit? Wish they'd made this a franchise. Fun movie
  • Don't listen to the snobby reviewers

Really? The reviews are this bad? Impossible. They just can't take it seriously? But James Bond is totally serious? Butch Cassidy and Sundance meet Bond and Lawrence of Arabia with a party mix tape. C'mon? What can go wrong with THAT picture? Give yourself a night off from the snob corps. Have some fun in a way that Steve Zahn and Mathew McConaughey can provide in spades. Hey, they're even making fun of themselves as they go. It's just good ol' laughing good guys beat all odds and overwhelm the forces that dwarf them, in the desert without the aid of food or water. And they attempt to make major archeological discoveries as they go. I mean, if you really want to make naval history, you'd search for an American Civil War ship in the Sahara Desert, right? It's that kind of show. Do they find it? Oh, c'mon now. Some things are just too outside even for a show like this. It may be crazy, but it's not absurd. I'm sure they managed world peace, though. Have fun and enjoy an entertaining movie that breaks no rules not broken already by James Bond, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, or Pixar. Quit tryin' to 'splain it. Have some popcorn. Laugh!

I first watched this movie 5 years ago, and fell in love with it! It is not the most amazing movie in the entire world, but I will watch it over and over again. I have easily watched it 300+ times. I have not read the book yet, so I feel like that didn’t give me bias, because I throughly compare movies to their books and shred them if they don’t follow the book exactly. So for people who haven’t read the book I would recommend it.

  • For the genre, what do you want?

There are so many bad reviews of this film that I avoided seeing it for a long time. And yes, it has slow moments and certain unbelievable plot points. But in this genre that is hardly a reason to rate so poorly. By the way, the similarly fated Ishtar is also not as bad as all the crap reviews and I recommend that. In fact both films share a sense of lighthearted fun and some reflexive irony. The locations and cinematography are very good actually. The acting and casting is for the most more than adequate for the genre. This is the kind of movie that will reflect your predispositions. If you are wanting a fun, goofy adventure romp with a nice morality tale, it's fine. If you are looking for murky depths and art-house complexity, go watch some Fassbinder or Lynch and avoid this. I would let my kids watch this film...

This is one of my favorite movies. It doesn't feature some flawed hero, examine some disturbing social phenomenom, doesn't star one of the critics' pets, but doggone it, I had a great time watching it. I loved Steve Zahn's character - Dirk Pitt's wise-cracking sidekick. It has good action, decent special effects, and arrives at a happy ending. What's not to like? I really wish they'd put out more Clive Cussler movies. I'll leave 'No Country for Old Men' , 'Letters from Iwo Jima' and all those other 'serious' movies to viewers who don't have enough angst in their lives and need another jolt of depression to feel normal.
