Description

Dee is a middle-aged wife and mom stuck in a boring job and a broken marriage in International Falls, Minnesota. A comedy nerd with a secret dream of getting on stage, her only escape comes in the form of no-name touring comics performing in the hotel where she works. This weekend brings Tim, a burned-out headliner who is all too aware of his status as a low-level nobody. When Dee invites herself to Tim’s room her walls begin to crumble as she’s forced to face the realities of a life that she’s become adept at ignoring: a husband who’s been cheating for years, and a dream she’s never had the guts to pursue. Their one night stand stretches into the next day as each acknowledge that they’re using the other for momentary comfort. Tim confesses that he’s going through a divorce, has lost custody of his son and that the show that night will be his last as a comedian. The line between comedy and tragedy is blurred as Dee is forced to ask the inevitable question that all must face: Now what?

Just one of those funny yet odd stories that you can relate to.
  • This is not a comedy

it has a character that is a comic, a character that wants to be a comic. Neither are funny. The actiing was good. if it had been promoted as joy-sucking-cinema I would have chosen to not pay 99 cents. Thats how bad it was, I wish I had my 99 cents back. Actually, I would pay 99 cents to not be reminded that I sat through this flatliner.
  • A movie that touches your heart ...

It’s been sometime since movies of this kind that touches your heart came about. Our lives are driven by the choices we make and the owning of the consequences of those decisions. Amazing work by Amber McGinnis and an excellent story by Thomas Ward. The roles enacted by each member of the cast were touching. Rachael Harris and Rob Huebel were excellent. Stop hurting and do something about it ... it’s our actions that define us.
  • Nothing Is Too Good To Say About This Movie

Besides being an insult to the people of International Falls and Minnesota in general with clumsily overdone accents and mannerisms, the movie is pretty much a snapshot of two miserable lives over a period of three days. The ending does not give much hope for improvement. It’s a far cry from Fargo.

This is a moving and funny dark comedy that should not be missed. In a world of big blockbuster movies and celebrity-filled mini-series, it is hard to find a film like INTERNATIONAL FALLS that makes you laugh and cry while watching truly honest characters. This movie is authentic in every way. I feel like all the characters are currently living in International Falls going about their business. Thomas Ward (writer) and Amber McGinnis (director) did an incredible job of bringing this story to life in the bleak yet beautiful world of Minnesota and standup comedy. Bravo to Rachel Harris for leading the cast and everyone involved. Truly a wonderful film.
  • Set in a Hotel Room

As someone who grew up in ‘The Falls’ I was hoping to see a whimsical film about quirky locals set on the south side of Rainy River. Instead I got a movie about vulgar, alcoholic, unhappy, unfunny, unattractive people set largely in a generic hotel room. With a brief sojourn to downtown and a short sequence ice driving on Rainy Lake. And Kevin Nealon is barely in the movie.
  • International Falls, it’s hard to leave

International Falls is the backdrop for this story about living out an uneventful life in a seemingly uneventful town. But as is true to life, “uneventful” cannot be blamed on geography. The charm of the real town of I.F. and its lovely town folk is wonderfully put on display here. Also, woes of leading an average life in an any name town are accurately portrayed by these two fine actors. To comedic perfection I say. The use of comedy as a cover for unrepairable sadness will leave you thinking about this movie for some time. The unexpected ending feels like the warm sun, shining in your face, while a winter blizzard shakes your core. Memorable, memorable indeed.

International Falls is a touching and honest portrayal of ordinary humans with broken lives, beautifully shot with strong performances by Rachael Harris, Rob Huebel, and Matthew Glave. The movie does such a good job of exploring the hopes and dreams (and failures) of average, everyday people. The chemistry and comfort between Harris and Huebel draws you in to their story. For a debut feature film, this work by director Amber McGinnis and screenwriter Thomas Ward lives up to the hype it received on the festival circuit.

I loved so much about International Falls. The chemistry between Huebel and Harris is top of the list. The dark humor throughout. Beautiful direction and story. Very worth watching.
