Description

How far would you go for financial freedom? One young family is about to find out. A successful entrepreneur living in Southern California, Scott Rieckens had built a “dream life”: a happy marriage, a two-year-old daughter, a membership to a boat club, and a BMW in the driveway. But underneath the surface, Scott was creatively stifled, depressed, and overworked trying to help pay for his family’s beach-town lifestyle. Then one day, Scott listened to a podcast interview that changed everything. Three months later, he had quit his job, convinced his family to leave their home, and cut their expenses in half. Follow Scott and his family as they devote everything to FIRE (financial independence, retire early), a subculture obsessed with maximizing wealth and happiness. Filled with inspiring stories and the influencers who make up the FIRE movement, Playing with FIRE is one family’s journey to acquire the one thing that money can’t buy: a simpler ― and happier ― life.

If you’re white and middle class you’ll enjoy this. Everyone else just jog on. Sanctimonious crap

I'm so glad this is starting to come to the surface. This movie is the perfect way to intro someone not familiar with the FIRE movement and get their toes wet. Does a good job of illustrating the reason behind the movement so that you can dive further on your own!

I thought it was a very good, educational movie! The lesson one can learn or deduct from this film. From least to most important as follows. 1. It is important to save. 2. Do not get into credit card debt. 3. If you chose to have kids ladies chose the right spouse who can afford for you to stay home if you need with your child!! Otherwise it is tragically sad especially if you have very young child at home. 4. Marry a rich good/kind man who loves and spoils you.
  • Wrong Rotten Tomatoes Movie

The rotten tomatoes score is for some dumb comedy with the same name. This documentary doesn’t deserve to be associated with it. Hopefully people read these reviews instead.

This documentary is ridiculous. It’s about a couple who free loads off their parents to save for retirement. How is that fair to those elderly parents? Didn’t they work hard enough raising them ? The wife is dreadful, all she does is complain , her priority should be her daughter but it’s not. I shouldn’t have wasted my money on this documentary.

This is the perfect movie to represent the financial independence community and bring this way of life to the for front for those that may be apprehensive when hearing about this movement. I literally left the theater with a smile on my face but not before conversing with the fellow movie goers around about how much this movie did justice for our community. The movie shows the truth that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows but that the change in life style can lead to many great rewards. I will be buying this and rewatching it multiple times and hopefully sharing with those around me. The FIRE is spreading!
  • Great overview of the path to FI

Movie was well made and gives a high-level pass at the financial ideas behind the FI movement. Would love to have seen more screen time with the notable financial bloggers, but the central focus on a couple’s journey was a good way to explore the ideas of FI. Would recommend.
