Description

IN THEATERS NOW - Russ Millings has just been released from prison after serving 21 years for a 3rd strike conviction for possessing an ounce of marijuana. As he tries to adapt to a world he doesn’t recognize - including trying to learn how to use the internet - he finds an abandoned baby in a dumpster behind the fast food restaurant where he works as a dishwasher. Unsure of what to do, and caught between impulses of kindness and panic, Russ soon realizes this could be his chance at redemption. Starring Ethan Hawke in a critically acclaimed performance, Adopt a Highway “will simultaneously warm and shatter your heart” (Marisa Mirabal, Birth.Movies.Death.)

I found this movie to be quite interesting. Ethan Hawke, who is not one of my favorite actors, is spellbinding and stripped down raw in this film. It shows how good people can be tossed aside and the after-effects of what happens when they are tossed aside. Quiet, withdrawn, wanting human connection, wanting to matter to someone and desperately needing someone to love and someone to love him, this movie is poignant and and a reminder that at the end of the day, all anyone wants is connections…connections with our family, connections with the people around you, connections with society, and connections with ourselves. Excellent movie that you can’t look away from…that you shouldn’t look away from cause there are life lessons in this film. Be kind…to everyone…because you don’t know what someone is going through. So be kind because people need kindness and it’s such an easy thing to do that we usually fail to deliver. This movie, if you want it to, will make you ask questions about yourself and make you question how you can be a better person…for other people, for the world and simply for you as well.

Yikes. What was Ethan thinking when he read the script? “Ok so a few mumbles, play with a baby for a minute, back to mumbling. Sweet.” Why was he so clueless? Was he in solitary for 20 years? So frustrating. My finger is hovering over ‘Report a Problem.’

Ethan Hawke is a great actor, this director has made a few films. Why was this SO bad? Terrible audio - hire a mixer that can ADD something to the soundtrack, instead of just making noise - but that was probably the director’s fault, not the mixer, who knows. Hire a decent composer - there are plenty of talented composers out there that will work for cheap, so low budget is not an excuse. But again, this is probably the director’s fault. I mean really it’s ALL the director’s fault. He’s the director. AND the writer (ha ha). Which makes all the other poor decisions obviously clear. This director hasn’t had a single real-life experience. It’s like the screenplay was written by someone in high school who has NEVER had any life-experiences. The writer (director) has NO idea how a safe-deposit box works, that they actually have the internet in prison and about 100 other pink elephants in the screenplay. Hey mr. director - do you know what a pink elephant is? Google it. I can’t do EVERYTHING for you. Ha ha! The point is, you can only have ONE pink elephant in the middle of the room. You have ... let me count... how many pages was the “script”? Oh, and hey - when you’re shooting with a doll, MAYBE don’t make it the closest thing to the camera in the shot - while you put the LIVE, TALENTED actor far far away from the lens, in the dark. No creative excuse for that. We KNOW the baby is the focus, no need to go over the top with it. YOU are the director, no one is going to pull you back... that’s YOUR job. Well, what can I say? This guy is making movies and making a living making movies - so what can I really say. Good job at being a completely incompetent director, screenwriter and filmmaker. You should be relegated to making filler episodes on Netflix, or... music videos? What a waste of Ethan Hawke and whatever carbon footprint this production had. Thanks for using our precious natural resources responsibly. There’s more, but I need to go to the lobby and wait for the limo.

The movie had so much potential, but fell flat for me because it just didn't really give much details in any of the so called storylines. It was kinda like a great start without any middle, and then it ended...
