Description

THE NIGHTINGALE is a meditation on the consequences of violence and the price of seeking vengeance. Set during the colonization of Australia in 1825, the film follows Clare (Aisling Franciosi), a 21-year-old Irish convict. Having served her 7-year sentence, she is desperate to be free of her abusive master, Lieutenant Hawkins (Sam Claflin) who refuses to release her from his charge. Clare's husband Aidan (Michael Sheasby) retaliates and she becomes the victim of a harrowing crime at the hands of the lieutenant and his cronies. When British authorities fail to deliver justice, Clare decides to pursue Hawkins, who leaves his post suddenly to secure a captaincy up north. Unable to find compatriots for her journey, she is forced to enlist the help of a young Aboriginal tracker Billy (Baykali Ganambarr) who grudgingly takes her through the rugged wilderness to track down Hawkins. The terrain and the prevailing hostilities are frightening, as fighting between the original inhabitants of the land and its colonizers plays out in what is now known as 'The Black War.' Clare and Billy are hostile towards each other from the outset, both suffering their own traumas and mutual distrust, but as their journey leads them deeper into the wilderness, they must learn to find empathy for one another, while weighing the true cost of revenge.

  • Emotional Depth Is Nonexistent

Brutality is used as a cheat in an effort to obtain emotional depth that is lacking in its two main characters. That’s lame and offensive, even more offensive than the evil portrayed on screen. By the end, the characters seem little more than sketches on a story board. This certainly is no epic. Sadly the director only achieved making a movie that audiences will soon forget.

Beyond good, it was excellent! Acting was excellent, the storyline was excellent. Best I’ve seen in a long time?

I rented this for 5 dollars and it gave me a voice over narration version. I didn’t even know iTunes did that sort of thing. I can’t even figure out how to make it normal now... what a waste

Im really glad that I decided to rent this movie, but I wish that I had bought it. It is a masterpiece; unique storyline and beautifully shot- and very gritty. Its a movie that will stick with you for awhile. Difficult to watch but you cannot look away. Acting was superb and the lead actually sings like an angel...
  • NOT WORTH IT

I wish I could give less than one star. I found it very boring. I’m mad at myself because I read the reviews and ignore them, so here I am out $5 for a rent. What a waste.
  • Hard but wonderfully done

Don’t listen to the children leaving the one star reviews. This is a historically appropriate depiction of the brutality experienced by a young convict in Australia at the hand of English soldiers. The low reviews are from snowflakes unable to handle what real life can potentially look like outside their bubble. Don’t get me wrong. It is horrifying, but this film is beautifully done and deserves every merit. If you enjoy historical films and don’t need the pretty bow on top holding your hand to “happily ever after” in the end, this is definitely a film to see. If depictions of rape, murder or slavery offend you however, you may want to pass this one up as it holds nothing back.

don’t watch this garbage. IFC trolls are leaving all the good reviews. This is trash, cheap and predictable.
  • Really Bad

Gruesome beginning morphs into revenge flick that studder steps into romantic comedy, ending with Billy Elliot and California Dreamin. Dumb and wholly unsatisgying.
  • What the heck is with all the Rape scenes.

I think a great story can be told without the over done and WAY TOO MANY RAPE SCENES
  • Well made but ROUGH TO WATCH!

Not for everyone! This is Clockwork Orange level hard to watch actually it’s even worse. But a great film nonetheless. To be honest not good enough to watch again but if you love film and have a strong will and stomach I recommend.
