Description

In this funny, uplifting tale based on an actual lie, Chinese-born, U.S.-raised Billi (Awkwafina) reluctantly returns to Changchun to find that, although the whole family knows their beloved matriarch, Nai-Nai (grandma), has been given mere weeks to live, everyone has decided not to tell Nai Nai herself. To assure her happiness, they gather under the joyful guise of an expedited wedding, uniting family members scattered among new homes abroad. As Billi navigates a minefield of family expectations and proprieties, she finds there’s a lot to celebrate: a chance to rediscover the country she left as a child, her grandmother’s wondrous spirit, and the ties that keep on binding even when so much goes unspoken. With ‘The Farewell’, writer/director Lulu Wang has created a heartfelt celebration of both the way we perform family and the way we live it.

It was a great movie, but I would never consider it a comedy.

So lame. Highlighting a specific cultural difference seems to be something Hollywood and the Indie set freak out about now. Like any good writing or “geist” makes a good movie. That sort of pathetic thought process truly marks the end of the world. How, as a species can we go on when the mud puddle of human experience has been scraped for every last pebble and all that has come before ripples away into meaningless nothing as the man who stepped in it is more worried about his wet shoe than the fact that he just destroyed the last vacant idea.

YEAH AWKWAFINA SHULD OF DESERVED AN OSCAR FOR THIS! But white Hollywood always be playing with POC in films. Over it. Please encourage others to watch film with a REPRESENTATIONAL CAST, WOMEN WRITTEN AND DIRECTED ETC! Come on y’all! Open your eyes to a new world of fantastic film that ain’t be having the male perspective. Also HUSTLERS and THE FAREWELL deserve as much recognition as LITTLE WOMEN. Period.

I just couldn’t get through this movie. It was dreary and boring. I didn’t think it was all going to be subtitled. One Star for Nai-Nai, she was charming. Oh look... NOW it’s 99 cents. What a waste of 5.99.

    So underrated
  • overrated, wandering

Eight brave souls rated this movie a 1 or 2 stars. I applaud them as this is a wandering, aimless script telling an obvious story. Don't waste your time. Unless, of course, you love Awkwafina and remember her amazing performce in Crazy Rich Asians. But this is not that performance as it is not that joyful character The director clearly went with a story she had in her head, because it is not in the writing and screenplay. It sorely needs a better writer and story editor. If you think you created something as wonderful as The Big Sick or The Joy Luck Club, you didn't. Let's move on.

It was soooooo boring. And be prepared to read subtitles. Our family rented it because we thought it would be more of a comedy because of Awkwafina. (The movie is labeled Comedy/Drama.) The "funny" parts were lame. Super disappointed. Everyone nearly fell asleep.
