Description

Casey (Jesse Eisenberg) just can't seem to win. Attacked on the street, humiliated at his job and even emasculated by his dog, he joins a local karate dojo led by the enigmatic Sensei (Alessandro Nivola) to learn how to defend himself. In the midst of his training, Casey becomes friendly with a female instructor (Imogen Poots) and soon realizes he is caught in a bizarre world of outcasts, fraternal rituals and hilarious hyper-masculinity.

One of those wannabe hipster, pretentious film with no real substance. The only thing nice about this film was the cute dog.

Excellent and compulsively watchable flick. Great acting and rock solid moment to moment action.

This sideways leaning movie redeems itself in the end. I don’t know in what world so many can die and nobody is looking for them. By the time you’ll want to give up it will be over.

I watched it expecting a dark comedy and though I laughed at some absurd moments, the overarching theme about mental illness kept me thinking for several hours. It is quite subtle in the delivery and the character development is just enough to make you commit to learning what will happen to them.
  • Pretentious, Dull, Trite, Boring, Predictable

This movie tries to be artsy and make a statement about masculinity and give a host of other muddy messages, but it’s totally pretentious, uneventful, and extremely boring. On top of that, almost every plot twist you can see coming way before it happens. I knew early on I should have turned it off, but kept hoping it would get better...it didn’t. If you want an actually fun Jesse E. movie, watch American Ultra instead. It’s like an action movie, comedy, and independent-ish love drama, with a slight comic booky feel. How’s that for original? Just avoid this self defense one. Trust me.

I never give reviews but this movie was beyond horrible. The violence and negativity was overwhelming. It had no redeeming value. There is no way this is a comedy. It is a disaster.

I loved it. If you don’t enjoy wonderful quirky stories with dry dank humor, then look elsewhere. If you do, this be one for you!
