Description

One of the world's greatest dramas is turned on its head through a bold and new perspective in OPHELIA. Set in medieval Denmark and spoken in a modern tongue with a poetic twist, it recalibrates the classic Shakespearean tragedy of 'Hamlet' so that its unspoken, complex heroine may share her own story. As a rebellious and motherless child, Ophelia (Daisy Ridley) is taken into Elsinore Castle by Queen Gerturde (Naomi Watts) as one of her most trusted ladies-in-waiting. Soon enough, Ophelia captures the affections of the young Prince Hamlet. A passionate romance kindles between the two in secret as the kingdom is on the brink of war amidst its own political intrigue and betrayal. When Hamlet's father is murdered and the prince's wits begin to unravel into an insatiable quest for vengeance, Ophelia sharply navigates the rules of power in Denmark all while struggling to choose between her true love and her own life.

Great cast! Cool to see a different perspective in a classic.

This film is an absolute masterpiece!!! My family (a middle aged mother and father, elderly grandmother, teen girl, and tween boy) watched this together and each member found this film to be very entertaining and enchanting. It has just the right blend of fantasy, adventure, drama, and romance, making it enjoyable to watch on your own or with family. The story is strong, with good writing and a heavy plot that doesn’t adhere firmly to the original story of Hamlet but still holds up extremely well on its own. Combined with astounding costumes, beautiful and unique set design and landscapes, and very authentic acting (seriously, someone give Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts an award for this or something) this movie is a solid five stars!
  • Who keeps hiring Daisy Ridley???

There are planks of wood more animated than that wannabe thespian. Please Hollywood, stop hiring Daisy Ridley

This is such a well written and acted film. Don’t let the fact it’s a period piece from seeing it. It’s that good ! 💕
  • Beautiful reimagining!

I’ve always loved Hamlet and consider myself a bit of a purist, but this was a brilliant retelling of Shakespeare’s classic, with some very unexpected twists and turns while remaining mostly faithful to the original story and language. Beautiful medieval settings and costumes worthy of an Oscar. Rented it and watched it four times. Looking forward to owning this gem of a masterpiece that is much like the telling of a dark fairytale.

claire mcarthy does an amazing job with this. i honestly excpected it to be cheesy, but the cinematography is stunning, Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts are great, and my attention was held throughout the entire movie. It's got drama, action, and everything you want in a movie. Definetely would recommend

Truly a beautiful film, and begins well enough, before devolving into something Shakespeare would have avoided like the plague. Soap opera twists replace the tight denouement of the original play, and the fantastic cast struggle to pull off these ridiculous re-imaginings. Something is rotten in Denmark, and its the script. Only for die-hard fans of the genre and hopeless romantics, this feminist version is predictably weak, it relegates all the men to the roles of thugs, idiots or rapists. Men bad, women good. Except for the Bard himself, presumably. Yawn.
