Description

With Earth in disrepair and no longer inhabitable, the human race begins to leave the planet for a new home on Mars. One of the departing vessels, the ship Aniara, runs through a field of space wreckage shortly after takeoff and is damaged beyond repair. With Aniara knocked off-course and drifting powerlessly out of control, the crew and passengers alike must wrestle with the reality of their fate. Crew member MR (Emelie Jonsson) operates a sentient computer that allows humans to experience idyllic memories of their lives on Earth. As the ship drifts further into space, the passengers begin to lose hope and sanity amid the growing sense of disaster. Pressure builds on MR as she is the only one who can keep the burgeoning insanity and lethal depression at bay.

watched it with the subtitles. I'm super smart so I just read it, and I liked hearing the swedish language. great movie, alot of unanswered questions and thats one thing I liked about it. It's depressing but in a good way. if you like films like Solaris, Pandorum and Sunshine you'll like this one.

1/4 star. No Socially Redeeming Value. What a piece of crap! First of all I want to spend my rental money on movies that are not dubbed. If a movie is dubbed, the description and trailer should be in the native language, so that I don’t get sucked into a pointless rental. I do not enjoy spending two hours reading a translation at the bottom of the screen. The movie content which was loaded with ugly naked women that are all man haters and but one full frontal momentary male naked man was barely a plot worth including in the meaningless story. Notice that I said naked not nude. Nude would be an artistic creation. This rambling story about a ditzy lesbian trapped in space just does not...... anything. Don’t waste your money on this one.

I enjoyed this movie for the risks it takes. It feels very similar to Meeks Cutoff - but for Science Fiction. It's bleak. Sometimes hard to get through - but very engaging.

The concept of this movie alone is great and could sustain a multi year tv series. This movie is not boring, I actually wish it was longer, especially near the end, but I loved what I got regardless. Other movies like this that I liked, maybe get a better idea if you’ll like it: Annihilation, Arrival, Interstellar, High Life, Sunshine, 2001, Primer, Transformers 5: The Last Knight
  • Brilliant sci-fi, but not a mainstream film

Fascinating to see the mixed reviews. I found the film to be something entirely new, and quite thoughtful. The story is great, and there are several concepts in the film that seem like new territory. The actors are great throughout, and the subtitles seemed fine and did not diminish my enjoyment. (I do wish that they would translate a few on-screen words that aren’t spoken.) The pace is pretty slow, but it’s telling a compelling story about what would likely happen to a society when things go terribly awry. It gets dark, but understandably so. Just don’t go into this expecting a lot of action, CGI, or aliens. But if you liked the story elements in 2001, Solaris, Captive State, or Arrival, you’ll probably like this.

I had such high hopes, maybe too high, this would be a quality as Sci-Fi film. The pace was a bit slow and some of the initial scenes were good and the actors fine, but the last 20 minutes TOTALLY fails. I understand this as based on a poem and will have to check if the ending is the same. Bottom line, don’t waste your time or money. #sorrynotsorry
  • Technology will not save us

I judge a film by whether I will watch the film, again, and if I would purchase the film. I am looking forward to watching the film, again, and purchasing the film in the near future. Andre Tarkovsky would have loved this film. If you are a fan of the novel Solaris by Stanislous Lem, the Andre Tarkovsky film by the same name and the English language version staring George Clooney, you will embrace this film. Absolutely spell binding and chilling right down to absolute zero. A grim reminder that technology will not save us.........just the opposite is true in Aniara.
  • A depressing version of ST: Yoyager

This movie begins with an intriguing premise: a giant spaceship traveling from Earth to Mars gets detoured due to unforeseen circumstances, and heads off into the dark of space, with no signs of rescue. However, the premise itself creates enormous plotholes from the get-go. The "incident" occurs hours into the flight, and since the ship is incredibly advanced technology the size of a city, are we really to believe that no extra fuel is stored ANYWHERE on the ship, or that someone somewhere couldn't have been radioed for help?? There is also literally no mention of communication with any entity regarding their situation, and it was clearly established in the beginning of the film that humans remained on Earth, and had colonized Mars, so...where are they? And the ship runs out of a lot of necessities quickly, and yet somehow booze and drugs never seem to run out. The lazy writing continues, as strange incidents occur that are supposed to mean "something", but end up meaning nothing. Interesting concepts are introduced, and then ignored/abandoned shortly thereafter. Being your average European flick, depressing situation after depressing situations occur, random group nudity is witnessed (not in a good way), and then it just...ends, in a way that is both depressing and pointless, with nothing to be gained or learned by the viewer. I'm a big fan of cinema, so I appreciate films with nuance and hidden meaning, and I get the "point" of this film, but it all ends a little flat and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not recommended unless you can see it for free.
