This film depicts the Great War now over a hundred year ago. The lads are still human as they once were and you truly believe you were listening from them.

Absolutely amazing film. The color enhancement really brought it to life. I cannot imagine what those brave men went through in that horrible war. I am sure that the 15-19 year olds in today’s society would absolutely not be able to cope with any of what I just watched. It’s scary to see how far we have declined as a people. Our technology may have advanced but our character and integrity sure have regressed.

Usually I'm a fan of Jackson's work, however, being a huge history geek, this falls extremely short for me. The footage is great. I love seeing it colorized and hearing the mean speaking about their experiences first hand was fabulous. That being said, here are the issue(s) for me that make me dislike it. The footage shown in almost no way matches what the men were talking about. Occasionally it did, but more often than not it didn't. This showed randomly early parts of the war footage with ends of the war footage with no regard at all for how it actually fit the actual timeline of the events of WWI. Admittedly the first hand accounts did seem to follow historical events somewhat, but the video clips jumped all over the place. Additionally, there should have been at least a minimal narration behind this. There were huge battles that I could tell the men were talking about but lacked any context for a the average person. Where they in the Marne? Where they in the Dardanelles? Was this at Verdun? Was it at any of the lesser discussed 'skirmishes'? Understanding that this was the first global mechanized war, there were literally as high as 75,000 casualities in a day in some of these battles. This stuff matters! As the war dragged on, both sides got progressively better at killing and maiming soldiers for the sole purpose of making the other side say 'uncle'. Over all, I enjoyed hearing the first hand accounts and I love seeing the footage colorized, but it was not at all what I was hoping for or even expecting. Jackson is better than this.

Should be required viewing for those about to reach draft age. The men who clamor for war today are the same men who tucked their tails when it was their time. Then as now. And this movie shows the results.
  • Great computerized colorations of the old films.

However, the colorization is the only positive comment I can make. The narrative was poorly put together. It was like listening to a couple dozen old men talk about their experiences. The producer did seem to care if these men sounded intelligent or senile. I had to endure the narrative to enjoy the colorized film. Not worth the rental price.

The footage restoration is remarkable but the documentary itself is rather low effort. It consists entirely of footage (some enhanced, some not) with audio recordings of WW1 vets telling stories. There is no overarching theme, narrator, soundtrack or bits from historians to tie it together. I’m generally a huge military history fan but making it through TSNGO without falling asleep was quite an effort. I highly recommend renting before buying.
