Description

Based on Lois Lowry’s beloved, best-selling young adult novel, the haunting story of The Giver centers on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with The Giver (Jeff Bridges), who is the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community’s secret past. With this newfound knowledge, he realizes that the stakes are higher than imagined – a matter of life and death for himself and those he loves most. With the odds against him, Jonas knows that he must escape their world to protect them all – something no one has ever done before.

I understand the reasoning behind what the elders did. We fight over resources, and we are cruel to one another. We have vanity and envy, and we destroy ourselves over lines drawn on a map.

I understand why it’s black and white but the part the part when the baby died was sad and at the end it was a bad ending

I see these horrible reviews and I’m taken back... this movie was absolutely fantastic and one day our society will most likely mirror this... sadly as you can see the government or whatever their called here (the elders or sum) is still in control and is the higher power.... the acting is AMAZING and the concept was fantastic for a movie

This is the ultimate reason why we need to stop giving dark subject matter the house of mouse family film treatment. The book this movie is based on explores similar themes to the writings of George Orwell. It’s a cautionary tale on the type of society and mentality that can arise from extreme conflict and unrest. A world where conformity was expected and individuality and choice were gone. This is a message we need more then ever right now. Instead of being a faithful adaption of the book that could convey this message to a modern audience, what we got was a horribly miscast actor as Jonas who gave one of the worst acting performances I have ever seen. In the book Jonas wasn’t even 17 and the actor that played him in this movie looked like a 24 year old. Brenton Thwates’ performance as Jonas was unbelievably wooden and not believable even for a movie about a society where there is no color or choice. The giver himself should have been a much older character then Jeff Bridges could portray. Despite that Bridges’ performance was the best one in the movie. The biggest issue though is how horribly they botched the message of the book. They basically turned this movie into something between a standard Tom Cruise flick and something Pixar would make. It’s the standard kids movie formula. A setup a climax a very sad scene and a generic happy ending. Usually if you’re going off animated movies that formula usually works fine but for a live action adaption of a dark Orwellian book, it wasn’t the right away to do it. This should not have been labeled a kid’s movie at all.

Like thee story line, but the movie is black and white 98% of the time. But I at least understand why

I read the Giver book and the book was much more pretty and intersting then over the top cliche romantic sc-fi thriller. Despite it's criticism and loud critics this movie beholds to be a failure at any level.

I recommend that you read the book before the movie because you won’t really understand it. It is a awesome book and also a sad book.
