Description

A struggling NYC artist, John Hollar (John Krasinski), is forced to return to the small, middle-American town he left behind after learning about his mother’s illness. Back in the house he grew up in, John is immediately swept up in the problems of his dysfunctional family, high school rival and an over-eager ex-girlfriend as he faces impending fatherhood with his NYC girlfriend (Academy Award Nominee Anna Kendrick, 2009, Best Supporting Actress, Up in the Air). John Krasinski’s second feature as a director is a poignant look at the bonds of family and friendship.

Honestly, one of the best movies I have seen... just the right combination of funny and sad!! The acting is Superb... Great storyline... unfortunate this movie did not get the recognition it deserved!

A thoroughly well-crafted feature, "The Hollars" is populated with a stellar cast. Led (and directed) by John Krasinski and co-starring Margo Martindale, the movie is a study in understated and emotionally charged performance. Mixing the macabre with the romantic, the tragic with the comic, this sliver of Americana, this glimpse into an American family is a nicely balanced piece and a surprising joy to watch.

  • High hopes, but falls short.

Super likeable cast (besides his brother) and the story seemed promising but overall it was just ok. Really nothing special and kind of boring honestly. (and I like simple indie-ish hometown plot movies usually)
  • Tender, funny, real, priceless.

Laughed and cried and loved every minute of this fabulous ensemble movie. Every character and every actor were terrific. I can't say enough good things about this movie. It's about family. And yes, Margo Martindale deserves an Oscar.

I hadn't even heard of this movie when I saw it on iTunes but it was far and away the best film I've seen in a very long time. ❤

I have never actually written a review on iTunes. I love seeing movies--blockbusters, and indies. This movie though. It is truly an artful film. It didn't feel "cookbook" created to sure fire audience. It was unique, funny, emotional, and life like in many ways. Beautifully written, directed and acted. The characters were moving and relatable. I laughed out loud, I cried and I found myself lost in the Hollars world. It's just so well done, you need to see it for yourself.
