Description

In 1976 San Francisco, Minnie Goetze (Bel Powley) is growing up at the crossroads of the fading hippie movement and the dawn of punk rock. Like most teenage girls, Minnie is longing for love, acceptance and a sense of purpose in the world. Minnie begins a complex love affair with her mother's (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, "the handsomest man in the world," Monroe Rutherford (Alexander Skarsgård). What follows is a sharp, funny and provocative account of one girl's sexual and artistic awakening, without judgment. Based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel by Phoebe Gloeckner.

Don’t do it. You’ll regret it if you do. So don’t.
  • Crazy Coming Of Age

Strange and creepy plot of a 15 year old coming of age/sexual awakening, set in the 70's. Great acting all around. It gets raw and dark, more so than expected for a coming of age film.

being a woman, this quest for love/human touch felt all too real. This movie validated my emotions, and made me realize my potential. This tribute to femininity empowered me, and I think all girls should watch this. I'm not a sappy person, but this movie made me melt. Not to mention the cartoons and drawings scattered throughout the movie are phenomenal. 10/10, would recommend to a friend.
  • Engaging but contrived.

This film might make you uncomfortable, unless you find a story of a teenage girl initiating a torrid affair with her mothers much older boyfriend routine. Set within the sexual revolution and drug culture of the sixties, it just manages to convince that this comparative child ("Minnie") might plausibly ask "Monroe" have sex with her and he might respond with enthusiastic lust. What results is the descent of the girl into a series of adult experiences with the emotional tools of an adolescent to guide her, while her mother remains distracted by alcohol, drugs, and "her" Monroe. Yes, this film is both edgy and non-judgemental. The story is woven without moral pronouncements, the lack of which some might find offensive. The character acting is excellent and Minnies bifurcated personality (girlish teen-child and wantonly lustful adolescent) creates an plausible sense of how messy the adolescent years can be within a dysfunctional family. Where this film falls seriously short (spoiler alert) is the obligatory feel good reconciliation with her mother after the predictable discovery of her daughters clandestine activities and subsequent self imposed exile to the street. We are asked to believe this child emerges stronger and undamaged? I suppose that might eventually happen, but I grew up knowing a girl who went "wrong" at about the same age and the resulting tale of prostitution, a child placed in a foster home, HIV and early death is much more realistic.

In my opinion, not overrated—I loved this film. Yes, it was at times difficult to watch—it has many triggers for any woman who has come of age, but I found it healing in that way. 5 Stars. One of my favorites I saw this year.

This film enters the powerful world of a teenage girl's mind. Thoughts of sex, drugs, and random curiosities exist. This film embraces female sexuality. It's unique, heartbreaking, and just lovely all in all. Bel Powley does an extraordinary job at portraying this fifteen year old girl. I agree it's not a replica of a teenage girl's life but it's relatable and to the point.

This movie tries too hard and ends up superficial. We turned it off, even though we love San Francisco, crazy stories, etc. Doesn't hold together.
